Matewis: After all you were talking about a horrible final boss fight, which Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy are both guilty of.
Well, which game isn't? ;)

I guess my long post above shows that boss battles in general are one of the main reasons why I stop enjoying games and abandon them instead, and I also find that combat often gets worse shortly before the end of the game, with artificial difficulty spikes or huge amounts of trash mobs thrown in your way to prolong the finale or to make it more "dramatic" which to me often translates to more tedious because they fail to make it interesting and fun.

Matewis: because of the lock on mechanics necessitated by it having to be playable with a controller.
The sad thing is, it doesn't feel right when played with a controller either.

In March I gave up Oniken. I finished the official levels to get to see the "GAME OVER" screen, but a last "extra" level was just too hard and frustrating to complete for me.
I don't see the forementioned Super Hexagon as a game I didn't complete, same as for Devil Daggers. Those are games to test myself and see where I can get to. Butcher is hard as hell too, and at some point I could not progress anymore on SEVM, but I don't think I am done with those titles. I have not given up, I still want to get back to those and try to master them.
I would be happy to complete Downwell one day.

Of late, the best example would probably be Alien Nations. Having finally bought the game, I managed to do better than I did with the demo version when I was a kid. However, at some point in the early campaign missions, I hit a wall when I couldn't defeat an AI player. The game is similar to the Settlers series in that you need to jump through many economic hoops before you can field a decent army. It's much harder here, though, because keeping your cities fed and satisfied can be nightmarish, to say the least. Any time Constructor on hard difficulty is easier to play, you know something's up.

Maybe I'll give that mission another go sometime, but I really don't look forward to the litany of "Your population wishes for a [something I already gave them plenty of multiple times]!" messages.
Serious Sam 2 - I was never able to beat the end boss. Even with a lot of extra lifes it wasn`t possible. Everytime I got killed, the boss regained full life.
I'm a cheater so there is nothing I won't just dial up the cheating to overcome but for games that I feel I must be missing something Divinity 2's final bit where you need to protect the airship no idea how that's doable when you need to think about your own health as I've failed it when immortal.

I don't think I've ever stopped playing a game due to difficulty. Really can't think of a single one.

I just remembered, I was never able to beat Macho Man on the original NES Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

Evidently I'm not the only one. In the game's prime there were A LOT of people who thought Tyson was easier to beat that Macho Man, and I knew a lot of people who had beaten Tyson but not Macho Man.

I game I gave up maybe forever is Legend of Grimrock. I don't think it's too hard, but I had thrown away a necessary item and couln't progress withouth it. I think that a game becoming unwinnable without even telling the player is unacceptable game design and won't play again. I have spent hours trying to figure out why I was stuck and that totally spoiled the fun. It's a pity, because I was enjoying it.

I recently finished Snake Rattle 'n Roll with the aid of an emulator and instant save. Many games of the era were so difficult that it killed the fun and it seems like they were noot even made to the player to enjoy them or seem the end. The Immortal is another title that comes to mind.

Some adventure games are enfuriating and can be solved olny following a solution. The Feeble Files towards the end is one of those and I rage quit it.

A more recent title I gave up to near the end is Limbo. I watched the ending on Youtube and was glad I hadn't wasted hours trying to reach the end as it was totally not worth it.

Are you perhaps thinking of Mr. Dream?

Mr Dream was the fighter added to the game after Tyson was removed and the game became just "Punch Out".

"Mike Tyson's Punch Out" had Super Macho Man. When you beat him you then faced Tyson.

Too difficult is usually not the issue (for me, and for the type of games I usually play). I'll quit a game if it makes me replay big parts over again (and no free saving).

I also quit conversations with people who use the words "save scumming".
After finishing 7th Guest (with walkthrough) I installed 11th Hour for completion. The puzzle is language based and it sucks as a non-native speaker. And then the first puzzle I encountered is the horse chess piece puzzle. I know that I could just using some walkthrough again but it just killed my interest on the game.

Oh, and anybody ever try the free Sunrider Mask of Arcadius? There's a battle that you have to reach another side to escape. Still haven't passed those cause suddenly the enemies just multiplied.

Legend of Hero Tonma on arcade machine. By the time i reached the final boss, my wrists would hurt hard.
ugh, the older i get the more games I just cant deal with anymore. add most shooters, platformers to this list. anything that has combo click combat/actions basically.

CMOT70: I haven't played Jedi Outcast yet, but I did play Academy earlier this year and I still remember that final boss. That's the one I beat without taking a single hit by running laps around the outer edge of the arena with the boss chasing me the entire time. As soon as my force lightning ability recharged I'd turn around and zap her and then back to running laps. Felt more like something from a comedy movie.
I'm going to have to remember that if ever give it another playthrough. Jedi Outcast has less lightsaber combat, and of course there's no dualwielding or staff-lightsabers. Also, the first 20% or so of the game is a straight-up first person shooter. But still I think it's the better game by a narrow margin. The levels for one are far better designed imo, and evokes the Star Wars vibe more effectively. The characters and story are better as well. Not on kotor's level by any means, but not too shabby either.

And QTEs in Force Unleashed boss fights? Hard pass.
