System Shock 2 shows its age when it comes graphics, but the sound designs holds very well. Enemies make their presence known with their distinct vocalization, creating a feeling of tension by reminding players that they are never safe. It's spiritual successor, Bioshock, has some pretty good sound design as well.

I disagree. Sound effects in System Shock 2 are too sharp and recorded with low-quality, 3d-scene is almost non-existent in comparison to the Thief series, and enemies' comments are both written and pronounced stupidly. In addition, boring and uninspired soundtrack is a huge disappointment after really good music of the first System Shock.

brouer: The iMUSE system in TIE Fighter was pretty great at making the music fit the action on screen.
Attempting to substitute that with short CDA-tracks may not have been one of the worst ideas in all of gaming history, but not leaving the original implementation as an option can easily be counted as such.
Doom of course. Whenever I hear any piece of media use a sound effect from the game, I immediately think Doom. Yes, even Doom used a lot of sounds from a sound bank back then, but it is what made these sounds instantly recognizable everywhere.

Blood. Spot on soundtrack (MIDI) and I especially like the explosions, Gargoyle growls and the cultists in general.

Serious Sam. The sound plays an extremely important role as it allows you to tell in advance what's heading your way and to also dodge enemy attacks without having visual contact with all the enemies. The rumbling of a Sirian Werebull rushing your way is a good reason to panic :P

Shadow Warrior 2. The combat is so visceral and meaty in large part due to the sound. Especially enemy screams/suffering are spot on when you set them on fire or electrify them or just straight up splatter them with a huge critical hit. Makes me look forward to every next group of enemies to ruthlessly dispatch. Also, the main theme songs both in Shadow Warrior 1 and 2 are incredible.

Unreal 1. The soundtrack along with the ambience and level design creates an incredible feeling of wonder. It must have been completely mind blowing, playing it back then right when it released. I missed it by a couple years and was still amazed. Especially the translator message sound really stuck with me.

As you can see, it's mostly FPS games for me, as the sound design there is very important/noticeable.

Arx Fatalis

I've never played this game before, but I've watched a review for the game on YouTube by a YouTube channel called MandaloreGaming. And in that review, he showed the audience a brief showcase of the game's exceptional sounds in creating the atmosphere of the different areas in the game. The developer of the game really did a great job in immersing the player into the game simply through the skillful use of its sounds.

What do you think of the Doom soundtrack for 3DO?

Edit: I can't remember if I brought this up already. Apologies if I did.

It's a very commendable offering. Quite good alternate versions of the originals, especially considering it was a one man job in an extremely limited time frame.

The original MIDIs will forever be stuck in my head as the main Doom music, but I still occasionally give the 3DO soundtrack a listen to spice it up.

Suspense is one of my favorite tracks and the 3DO version somehow has an even more eerie vibe that I like very much.

EDIT:
For reference, this video is probably how most people have heard the music (who didn't have dedicated Roland cards) and it's the version burned into my memory:

The 3DO soundtrack is here. Not all tracks have been remade for it:

Always felt Bad Company 1 had some great Weapon sounds.

I like Halo 1's shotgun blast. The sound had a subtle mechanical touch to it.

It may seem strange, but the best sound design in the Romance Club. It's a mobile game where you have to build a relationship, but damn it's completely sensible with every sound and music. This is my favorite!

action_fan: Dead Space has marvelous one, especially all these machinery effects in tech rooms, I remember them even today. Of course, horror games are first what comes to mind speaking of sound.
Dead Space and its sequel came to my mind instantly seeing the title of this thread. Enemies can be identified before you see them by the unique mutterings/screams/noises they make. Weapon and environment FX are also very distinct and crisp.
