It's just a way for GOG users to voice their desire to get a game on here. GOG may use it to show publishers there's interest when negotiating to get a game added to the catalog, but there's absolutely no guarantee that it will result in a game arriving on GOG.

GOG can't just put in their catalog whatever we want. It would be nice if it were that simple because we would have every new AAA game here in that case. :-)

GOG first has to find out who currently owns the rights to a game (The rights often get sold around if a company goes bankrupt.) and strike a distribution deal with them. Then they have to get hold of a legit copy of the game in case the owner of the rights doesn't have one any more. Then they have to check how well the game runs on modern systems. If it has serious problems they have to fix it up so that it will run with little to no trouble on most modern systems. And only then can they sell the game.

As you can imagine this is quite a lot of work. So the wishlist is here to give us, the customers, a means to let GOG know which games we would like to see here so that they know which games make most sense to pursue.

A pretty good documentary about the whole process can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffngZOB1U2A

so basically proves my point higher number of upvotes means gog is morelikely to pursue that game, so sniper elite v2 will never happen then cos that doesnt even have 200 up votes
The number of votes each game has just shows the number of people who care enough to show that they want this game here. But the votes don't affect whether or not a game comes here. GOG first needs to make a deal with the publisher some games like Mass Effect have a lot of votes, but I doubt they will come here. While others have a very small number of votes and turn up after being on the wishlist for several years. It's quite arbitrary.

Honestly, I'm not sure the wishlist matters much to anyone. It certainly isn't the deciding factor. The people voting on it are, after all, just a fraction of GOG's users, and often games are released here that had few votes, or ones that probably didn't even have a wishlist entry. Honestly, GOG's decision process when it comes to new releases is rather infamously vague.
I also don't think the wishlist matters much. People keep pointing other people to it as if it was going to help that it has a +1 vote on it. Active discussion about the requested game/feature will certainly bring more fruit than some arbitrary vote on a random wishlist.

The wishlist can't even be taken seriously since so many games have multiple entries. People can't be as- er, I mean bothered to search before they add an entry. Just recently I was thinking about the Darkseed / Dark Seed games (1 and 2). These 2 obscure games have 11 entries in the wishlist.

Then other people add multiple completely unrelated games in one entry ("diablo, fade to black, day of the tentacles").

Of course the best entries are those that make no sense whatsoever, like Cyberpunk 2077 for crying out loud.

Even at its best the wishlist is still useless. At this point it has to be obvious we'll never see any Rockstar game or anything that requires a 3rd party DRM client... Which at this point is any releaase from the likes of EA, Ubisoft and now also Bethesda because they have their own clients. You might as well ask for Half-Life. Oh wait, people actually do ;)

I love gog but wishlist is just a list of pipe dreams. You may suggest some obscure game that might be easy to get that nobody else has thought of but then nobody will vote for it anyway.

To be clear no guarantee but https://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_that_are_unofficially_confirmed_for_release_in_the_future_part_2/post8148

If you are interested in rumors of what might maybe possibly but maybe not coming here follow that thread or have a look at this one https://www.gog.com/forum/general/upcoming_gog_releases_2019_thread
It's probably there so they show it to IP rights holders during negotiations. A high number of votes doesn't guarantee that a game will be added, since there are many other factors at play.

Plus, it's harmless fun for us users and can help us discover new games.

I also find that it is a good way to make us discover new games
