Crisco1492: KOTOR. Every version I've tried, including the GOG version, has failed to allow me to start the game. At least the GOG version was nice enough to start up the menu for me -- even though the gameplay was just sound..
Which GPU do you have?

My current one is a NVIDIA 940MX. KOTOR has failed to run with every other laptop and GPU I've had as well.
I got GT Legends on Steam. I was able to install the game and load the menu, but when I opt to start a race, nothing would happen. For games that refuse to run on modern systems, I have an offline XP retro gaming machine and copy-pasted the game to that machine (which has no Steam but GT Legends runs without Steam present), but I got the same problem there: menu loads, but I can't start a race.
sniper elite 4 on xb1 x
literally stated that in my review "it just refuses to run"

I'd recommend you grab something with Intel graphics and run the game under Linux. Next best bet is AMD GPU.
Last month i've bought Mercenaries 2: World in Flames from a retailstore during black friday sale. Didn't had the game so far. But no matter how hard i tried, it refused to work, nagging about that i didn't had an internet connection, while that was the case. Contacted EA customer experience, since they published the game by then. Through the telephone they would send me a link with instructions, which were things like running UOtrace. Then after that they asked me (again) to mail them the cd key. Did that. Then some other employee came with the final verdict that the game isn't supported anymore. They pulled out the servers long time ago. Mercenaries 2 does have an activation system,. Hence why i kept getting a message about internet connection. So they suggested to go back with it to the retailstore and ask refund, since they could do nothing. And then buy the game from origin instead. Always fun when a company decided to pull out the activation servers and refuse to help those who can't get the game to work. They could have patched it out. And that so called customer experience could have give me the origin version, but no. I suspect that customer experience is just a callcenter, since it's semi-automated response, standard procedures and my last reply to them wasn't delivered.
Well, i have returned the game to the store, explained the whole situation. I've got my money back from that game.

This might be the first time I've ever seen someone recommend running something with an integrated Intel card. I'll give that a try.

Edit: Thanks! It worked like a charm when I forced it to load with the Intel processor.

are you asking us or just ranting?

Anyway for me

Beyond Atlantis (it loads up Longest Journey for some reason)
King's Quest 8 (just will not load)
Theme Hospital (will not load)
My original CD version of Battle Isle 2... the game started and ran just fine... but from round 2 or 3 on my units would deal no damage any more. That's the copy protection kicking in mistakenly thinking it's a pirated version, essentially turning the game into a demo... It never worked, not even under real DOS.
for me it's Alone in the Dark ...:(
One often overlooked troublemaker with older Windows games (like Gothic) is DEP (Data Execution Prevention) which, by all means, should be on, but might require to add exceptions to... doesn't help that it's pretty well hidden (under "Performance" of all things...)
I couldn't get The Devil Inside to work until I found a fix for the CD then it worked just fine.
I've found some old games don't like external disc drives or being mounted in daemon tools for some reason.
Just as a reminder to anyone in this thread.

For non-DOS games always try either dgVoodoo, DxWnd or nGlide to get the games running. So far, these 3 have never let me down. They are for getting the games to run, they don't fix installation problems and such.
