Here is what some game music would sound like if replaced with music from other sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZmxANMAQuw . When music is stand-alone, it is often irreplaceable (if it's great), such as some of Beethoven's symphonies, or Michael Jackson's Beat It. But when music serves a secondary purpose such as background score, it is often interchangeable. The music score in all the romantic movies can probably be switched among each other with no loss in effectiveness. All the environmental music in Witcher 3, Skyrim, etc., can probably be used for other western fantasy RPGs too (but maybe not in JRPGs). I recall seeing Walt Disney (the man) demonstrating how music in his 1940 film Fantasia can be substituted with other music. Btw, I would love to see the Game Awards add a Best Music award, since music is crucial to many games today as we know.

Um, they do?
And there are even specialized awards for game audio, like this or this.

As for on topic, why would you replace it? I mean, in game, sure, it may work, but if done well then just a few notes should remind you of the game, and of certain moments or locations of it in particular, if you happen to hear them again later, and that can obviously only happen if they're those specific notes.

Why i even bothered to spend money on radiostations in Cities: Skylines. The already iconic start of AOW planetfall, not even going near Stellaris themed music and that's only paradox games i'm talking about.

Motivations for replacing.

- Variation ?
- Mood ?
- convinced ?
Is this your student essay? This really feels like a student essay.

Guys, this happens ALL THE TIME in movies and TV shows. Quentin Tarantino puts music from other sources into his movies all the time. Is he writing student essays too? You guys don't have an inkling about this subject. SO refrain from making smart remarks until you do.

TV shows especially borrow music very often. It's hard to write original music. A lot of TV news report and fictional shows borrow music from movies and even other TV shows. Not all movie music is well known. And the viewers won't know the difference -- as you people just showed you know diddly poo on the subject.

I'm really turning the table on you people, aren't I. GET EDUCATED in this matter. As I said, this is done ALL the time in showbiz. It's called music adaptation. There used to be an Oscar for it, even.

That's true, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

If you want to change music in a game, the easiest way would be to mute it in settings, and play anything you want in the background in your preferred music player.

Then try watching the tons of movies made throughout movie history, such as those by Tarantino, Scorsese, etc., and then you'll have a clue. That famous music in the movie Platoon is ALL borrowed from another source, written decades earlier ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRCubAtPiKg ). It's always better to know something about the subject than to be shown how little you know about it on the Internet for all to see.

Borrowing music is not something you can claim is being done so easily. There are entire groups of lawyers dedicated specifically to the slapping down of anyone who makes a sound that even vaguely resembles Eminem.

Musical Inspiration, yeah. That happens all the time. Listen to the Ys Item jingle and compare it to the item fanfare from Metroid.

You still don't get it. Ask people like Tarantino or Scorsese how it's done: they ASK for and get permission from the original artists (or estates that own their work) and put their music in their movies, sometimes verbatim, sometimes with slight modifications. Again, using someone else's music in your own work has been done FOR AGES. In fact, it's done in a majority of cases, since it's hard and time-consuming to write original music. So why not just use someone else's? In Raging Bull, that opening music is from a famous opera, so is the music used in the color flashback. You people act like you've never seen a single movie in your life. An example you may be more familiar with: the music used by many YouTubers often comes from depositories of royalty-free music -- again, it's someone else's music.

Playing Doom with love songs by the Carpenters is very fun.

I don't mind if game music is also used for other games. That happens in every other media as well.

What I don't like is when game music gets removed or replaced with other music after years (famous examples: Mafia 1, GTA IV, the remasters of GTA3,VC and SA).
But this does not only happen to games either. For the BR-release of Married with Children the title song was changed, in the movie Fatal Instinct the song that played during the shopping scene was replaced. I am sure there are many more examples, but these two came to my mind first.
