skeletonbow: Quote: "Check those corners. CHECK THOSE CORNERS!"
Previous hints:
- It's a scary creepy game from the mid-90s.
- It is based on a highly popular scary movie franchise that started in the late 1970s, and it uses a highly popular FPS game engine from the mid-90s.
Ok, Here Is A
Newt Hint For You All:
- The game engine was one of the most highly popular game engines in the 90s, and I have to admit that while I was skeptical of whether this game would be any good or not before playing it, after playing the game I was
totally converted.
If nobody gets it after this clue, then we are all
doomed and I'm going to have to submit my shock and surprise to that old TV Show "
Ripley's Believe it or Not!".
skeletonbow: One more hint...
Hint 1: During the entire first mission of the game, as you roam around and are creeped out by the atmosphere, visuals and audio, it only builds the suspense as there are no actual enemies present in the entire mission.
Hint 2: A sequel to this game was also made which used the next generation game engine that superceded the one used in this game, however the sequel was never as well known because it was difficult to obtain due to legal rights complexities.
Ok, doesn't appear that there are too many people left to continue guessing so I've decided to just share what game it was. Some folks got super close to guessing it but alas did not quite get it. I admit that my choice of game was a bit tricky and slightly out of the full on mainstream, but it was a great game anyway even if a slightly obscure reference. :)
Previously when I said I was going to give one more hint, I actually implanted several hints in my hint and I have highlighted them in bold text in my quote above. So... what is this game?
<drumroll>
The game is
Aliens-TC (Total Conversion), a fan made mod to id Software's DOOM. I guess the game was maybe not as well known in the GOG community as I thought it would be. I figured for sure there would have been some other die hards out there that played this awesome game back in the 90s and remembered it for sure, but perhaps it was more obscure than I thought it was. :o)
I'm not certain how well it would hold up to today's games in terms of creepiness or other factors but it was an amazing experience back in the day. The best way to play the game was to configure the gamma correction on the monitor so that dark was dark, crank up the audio to real-life volume level, kill the lights completely, isolate yourself in the room with the PC and keep everyone else far away while you immerse yourself in the scary Alien infested game rife with the complete array of aliens from the movie franchise including face huggers and the queen! This game made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up when I first played it, and it is a shame that more people may not have been aware of its existence nor gotten a chance to play it. If anyone was a fan of the id Software games and engines in the 90s and is a fan of the Alien franchise, this is IMHO a must-have 90s Alien game even though it is an unofficial fan-made product.
They made a sequel to this based on id Software's Quake game engine also, however the sequel got shut down due to legal processes by the owners of the Alien movie franchise if memory serves correct. It was difficult to find a copy of it anywhere on the Internet for some time however I would be shocked if it is not easy to find online nowadays.
Anyhow, for all of your Aliens-TC pleasure, here is a game play video of this 90s masterpiece, with the infamous quote from the movie dialogue itself being triggered in game often as you approach corners.
