tammerwhisk: What control scheme? I can't say I've ever had that happen.
avatar
skeletonbow: I believe he's talking about how the game automatically changes the horse direction and/or camera movement after so many seconds if you don't constantly move in a different direction yourself. This can cause the horse to shift direction right into a tree or something sometimes. When you move the horse in any given direction with the camera pointing wherever you like, if you do not move the camera or horse left/right at all a countdown timer starts and after so many seconds (5-10 or so) the game engine resets your camera view to wherever it thinks it should be pointing instead of leaving it the F alone, and sometimes it adjusts the direction the horse is moving also. When it's out in the open it's not too big of an issue, but when there are lots of trees and obstacles that cock-block the horse he ends up running right into them and having a temper tantrum fit.

The problem is it will move the horse around when it doesn't matter, sometimes causing you to go off trail and other things, and when it would be actually useful to move the horse such as to slightly deviate a few degrees to the left or right to avoid a tree or other small obstacle, it'll let the horse run right into it and then freak out acting all surprised.

Either way the horse is still a million times faster than Geralt can run when you double tap the shift key and get him going into a full tilt gallop. The horse can run at least 2-3 times the speed Geralt can, and if you let go of the W key while the horse is in cantor or gallop mode, the horse will attempt to follow the road/trail you're on with some degree of success on straightaways/curves, and only gets confused to hell at forks in the road in which case it usually chooses to go the wrong way even if you move the mouse around to indicate your preference.

The horse controls definitely could use some improvements but the horse is an asset in the game even as-is IMHO and 10 times better than the stupid aggro-horses in Skyrim. :)
Not a fan of having a steed with balls of steel trying to solo a dragon?

--------------------
I sort of understand now I think. I use a gamepad for this game so whenever I use the horse there is constant input from the joystick so it never really tries to wrest control away (barring following trails...sometimes it causes the horse to wobble a bit). As a gamepad user the only major issues with movement I've come across with the horse is sometimes it will interpret npcs and pebbles(?) as invisible walls and grind to a deadstop if the collision is just "right".

Well, there's constant input from any device you use to control the horse, but there is input-lag and the auto-takeover that happens sometimes. Doesn't happen non-stop when using the horse, only when you least want it to. :) Yeah, the horse will happily gallop at mach 10 right into a fence or some other obstacle and keep galloping without moving, or get hung up on the slightest of things where a real horse would have a bit of a mind of it's own to avoid small obstacles easily going around them. It's clear they added some code to the horse to do this sort of thing as he will stop and throw a fit if you run at certain things which seems like a real horse would do also, but that code needs some enhancement IMHO. :) On the other hand if you try to force the horse to go up a hill, he responds very much like I would expect a real horse to respond even though I've never ridden one. :) He will give this "talk without talking" indication that is like "what the fuck, that's too steep dude, I can't go there" and look left, then right then left, like saying "NFW DUDE!" then make a bit of noise about it. That's cool. I wish he'd do more smart horse things in other situations too. :)

Yeah, the horse in Skyrim is slow until you find the sprint button in which case he becomes partly useful except you can only travel by horse about 30 feet before being attacked by wolves or bears or sabre tooth cats that run 9 times faster than your horse and you can't really fight anything while mounted in Skyrim due to lameass horse combat. :)

What would be awesome as shit, is taking the horse mounted first person and third person combat from Mount and Blade and putting it into every other game ever made. Mount and Blade figured out How Horse Combat is Done(TM). :) The horses in both Skyrim and Mount and Blade are stupid with respect to where they will attempt to walk though, both games letting your horse climb up insurmountably steep inclines that a real horse would break its legs on for sure. Witcher 3 gets that part right at least. I'd like to take Witcher 3's horse as a base, add Mount and Blade style sword/bow/anything combat, and make it FPP+TPP changeable on the fly. The only thing better could be if you could make the horse a flying rainbow farting unicorn also. :)

tammerwhisk: While more time might have helped weed out the myriad of bugs, it probably wouldn't have helped the controls much. The controls is more of a design thing than a polish thing.
avatar
Zoidberg: Yeah, I had more the bugs in mind when I wrote that. Controls are usually dreadful. Combat is OK but sometimes Geralt does whatever he pleases.

Combat was never this IP's forte anyway. It's just passable now.

But as I've said, running/sprinting > horsing.
There are a few mods on Nexus Mods you might like to look at then. As one of them is a mod to have a free camera unaffected by auto centre.

@CDProject/GOG please release a list of all the DLC so I can put my mind at ease that there is no neon-green unicorn to come.
I do not mind the wait for the DLC's as it gives me time to play other games, but it would be nice to know what is actually incoming.

I still only have access to DLC #1 and #2, where are the rest? Why can't I see them?
Lol i just found (by accident) that pig quest. CDP good job, its hilarious.
PS: Its in Velen :P
Nice goodies :)
The new card artwork is really cool. The pig quest is interesting up until the point where the NPC you're supposed to talk to in the cave doesn't spawn and you're stuck with no way to continue it.

Hi, I downloaded all the DLC which like me, and have those DLCs in my download folder. May I install those DLCs from that folder or I need to put it on in my GOG Games folder? Thanks for helping!

You can run the exe setup file from anywhere, it will automatically detect where Witcher 3 is installed. :-)
