Lifthrasil: So, what do you all prefer mechanics wise? Closed role madness? Or a (semi)open Setup?
Last time I was up for role madness and I don't think it worked too well so I am up for anything else this time.
While we're waiting, do you mind if I put up my next game set-up idea for discussion? Just to see if anyone has any thoughts? I don't want to discuss setups while a game is in progress, so as not to influence it.

Basically, it's based on my idea of adding a Guilty Child. Someone who's guaranteed to to be scum. The Court of Sultan gave me the idea that such a character could be a viable role if made non-lynchable.

So, it's a semi-open setup where the following roles are guaranteed:

Mafia Mayor - Guilty Child. Publicly known to belong to Mafia. As long as other Mafia members are alive, he's not lynchable.
May perform the Mafia NK.
Has 1-shot Use-Other's-Ability. Once in the game, he may take another Mafia player's, including one who has died, ability and use it instead. This only works, if that ability had any shots left, and the Mayor's using it uses up a shot. If Mayor chooses to use it, he may not perform the NK. The other player whose ability is used, may not, if alive, use the ability himself that Night, though he may still perform the NK.
Each Night, Mayor must choose a person to Vote, and the next Day starts with Mayor voting for that person. The Mayor may change his vote any time, but he may not Unvote nor vote NoLynch.
(Small print: The Mayor of course may claim that he chose his vote randomly, and may even do so, but he may not use any method that guarantees he chose randomly. For example, he may not encrypt his randomisation method the previous day and have it seeded by the next n posts. Nor he may use third parties, like random.org premium account, to carry out the draw. Not that I think anyone would get a random.org premium account just to carry this out, but I love adding the small print legalese).
N0 will take place in order for the Mayor to choose his vote for D1. Other roles may or may not be usable on N0 (I'll set it up depending on balance), but no killing role can be used N0 and no player may die that Night.
Guaranteed not to have any other modifiers.

Town 1-shot Vig.
Guaranteed not to have any other modifiers.

Mafia n-shot Doctor. n will be chosen depending on the number of players, possibly n=2 or n=3. The idea is that the Vig should have a very tiny window of opportunity should he decide to go for the Mayor. The Vig has only one shot, but the doctor has more.
Guaranteed not to have any other modifiers.

Other PRs and third party factions may or may not exist depending on the number of players. I'm toying with a few ideas.

Mafia is guaranteed to have Day chat.

Once all other Mafiosos are dead, the mod publicly announces it. At this stage:
_If the outcome is predetermined, the game ends with that outcome. Example, if 1 VT and the Mayor are left, the game ends with Mafia win, while if 3VT vs Mayor are left, the game ends with Town win. 1Vig vs Mayor at Night is a loss for everybody, assuming all of Mafia Doctor or Mayor's Use-Other's-Ability are used up. While 1 Town Doctor who can self protect vs Mayor is a draw.
_If the outcome cannot be determined, either due to the existance of a third party or a special PR, the game continues as normal. The Mayor can be voted going forward, though players can generally vote whom they please.

My only fear is that someone who's stuck with the Mayor's role would find it boring, but I'm hoping that The Day chat, together with the compulosory vote and its WIFOM potential, should make the Mayor's role interesting enough for the player.
Plus the Mayor's selection on D1 should give players something to discuss and hopefully make RVS much shorter.

And after all that, I though of something else.

The Mayor, Vig and Mafia Doctor roles, would be biddable. Something similar to what trent did with his Disney game.

Before the game starts, every participant sends me a number between 1 and 20.

First, the smallest unique number gets to be the Vig. If there is no unique number, then the smallest number chosen by 2 people gets chosen, and one of those is chosen randomly... etc.
Then the largerst unique number gets to be the Mafia Doctor. If there is no unique number left, then the largest number chosen by 2 people gets chosen, and one of those is chosen randomly... etc.
Then the number(s) chosen by most people is/are taken. The Mayor is chosen randomly from among the people who chose it.

eg. The participants send me the following number:
2,2,3,5,5,5,7,7,7,7,9,9

The smallest unique number is 3. Athough 2 is smaller it was chosen by two people and isn't unique. The person who chose 3 gets to be the Vig.
The largetst unique number is also 3, but that's already used for the Vig. There is no other unique number. The largetst number chosen by two people is 9, so one of them is randomly selected to be Mafia Doctor.
The number selected by largest amount of players is 7. One of them is randomly selected to be Mayor.

What do you think?

I prefer closed setups, especially role madness, but dealer's choice. I seem to remember you floating a MtG theme? Feels like role madness would be appropriate for that.

Sounds fun. I really like the idea of someone who is publicly known to be bad being able to mess with people's heads using their vote, like in court of the sultan.

@ZFR: interesting concept, but I don't know how to balance such a role. Let's try it in your next game. I'm up for being the guilty child. Everyone will assume that I'm scum anyhow in the next games. ;-)

As for my game, I think I'll go for a semi-open role madness. I.e. most of the roles will be known, some roles will be excluded, some roles will need to be secret.

The setting will be the world of Fallout.

Also there are some roles I would like to try.

1. Town Shelterer: basically a combined neighborizer/jailer. Each Night he can invite one person into a shelther. That person will stay in the shelter for the rest of the game. Persons inside the shelter will have a night-chat and will be untargetable for night-actions from outside the shelter. They also won't be able to target persons outside the shelter. But they can be targeted by other persons inside the shelter. Yes, scum inside the Shelter can perform the NK on people in the Shelter.

The Shelterer will not be inside the Shelter and he will not be known by the persons sheltered. If the Shelterer dies or is roleblocked the Shelter opens (either permanently or for that Night).

2. Track'er / Watch'er: a combined Tracker/Watcher that only works on female roles (half the roles will be female)

3. Genderbender: switches the gender of a target

4. CSI-Cop (we discussed this before): will take a sample of DNA from each crime scene and can take a sample of one person at Night, to compare to all crime scenes so far.
4a.) maybe he can also take a sample at Day, to circumvent the Shelter effect. But that would reveal him.

5. Medic: will heal sick people.

6. A bodyguard variant

7. An FBI-Agent variant, if the killing neutral role exists

8./9. Two secret roles, one killing Neutral role, one Town.

Scum roles:
Supermutant (Strongman),
Sewer Ghul (can try to sniff out the Shelterer and thereby a way into the Shelter),
Infector: will infect target with sickness, which will permanently roleblock that person starting the next Night, until healed by the Medic.

What do you think? Mad enough?

These would be the roles for a 12 player game. With 10 players the Neutral and the FBI-Agent would be missing. With more players, I would add some other roles. Maybe a regular Doctor.

Ooooh! Right! I wanted to run a MtG game. I could adapt the role madness just suggested to that setting instead of Fallout.

I don't really mind, the Fallout setting sounds fun!
Joe, get the memes ready.

Fuck. Yeah.

I don't like flavor normally but das some good shit.

We can try to lure my old kohai Hunter back in. He appears to be playing New Vegas right now.

Also, is anyone else on GOG only because they joined some 8 years ago to get their hands on the Classic (read "Best") Fallout games freebies?

ZFR: ...
Interesting concept on the guilty child, but I think it would create balance issues and whoever was the guilty child would not have much to do in game as he would be ignored. Also, if Mafia was only two people or even three and the unknown Mafia player/s was/were lynched it would be game over when normally even a lone player could still stay hidden and win the game.

trentonlf: Also, if Mafia was only two people
This is a very good point. With Mafioso + Mayor, Mafia essentially have just one life. This will require at least two players in addition to Mayor (and as such at least 11 players total).

I'll try to balance the role of course to compensate for this.

Never played Fallout. I got the freebies from GOG. It's been on my list of to-play-someday.

As Catte said: Might be fun to have a known scum to chat with in game, where town has to puzzle out their scum mates somehow and get rid of them before going after them. Sounds like fun.

I will, but then I usually see all others(not confirmed) as possible scum anyways. :)

Oh the fluff and flavor possibilities.

*GR starts to drool*

I'd prefer fallout, but yer call as always.
(Gonna be grumbling the entire game about it not being fallout if you change it tho)

No, but I bought them and have them on my account still...they were among my first purchases actually. :)

It would give scum more incentive to stay hidden(the non guilty child player[s], I mean).

Also, eh....some games seem to drag on....maybe a quicker game would be a nice change of pace? :|

Newbie.
I remember how some people complained they are getting nothing because they already own Fallout and they should be compensated by getting other game and even then I felt better than them because I had it too but was not acting like that.
Because what other reason there is to be here than to feel better than others, right?

Some MtG game should be done, if only to honour our mafia origin as Zchinque brought it here from MtGSalvation.

Vitek: Because what other reason there is to be here than to feel better than others, right?
I think you just described the reason why many humans do many things. o.0 ;)

(Btw I think I remember that fallout "fallout"....during the giveaway...if only faintly)

ZFR: ZFR's Law: Any end-game JOAT claim is fake and should be policy-lynched. Especially if a convincing breadcrumb is shown.
LOL, really? when should JOAT claim, then? :P a fake-looking BC gives more leeway? :D What if I'd been a 3rd-party?

"that guarantees" to who? town or fellow scum?
what do you mean by encrypt?
would a random.org free account be allowed and if so, wat's the diff?
