Will someone please tell me the correct viewing order for episodes of Firefly? www.tv.com says one order, Wikipedia says another, and they're packaged on the DVDs in yet a different order! What gives?!

While I don't think it's that bad, I really don't get all the "OMG! Firefly's the best!" fanboys either. The writing and acting is nothing to write home about. It's mediocre at best.

Well, criticisms aside, why don't different lists agree with the same order? The one you have seems to match the one on Wikipedia, but I notice in both cases, the original air dates are out of order! Why would they have originally shown them in the wrong order? And I thought that Serenity was made as more of a movie intended to act as a conclusion at the end of Firefly, am I wrong?

Anyway, I've been watching them in the order of the original air date, so as of now I've seen:

The Train Job
Bushwhacked
Our Mrs. Reynolds
Jaynestown
Out of Gas
Shindig

So far there seems to be continuity (although each episode is pretty independent from the others), but I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track.

Serenity is both the name of the sequel movie and of the two-part pilot of the series, which was pushed by FOX and broadcast later in favor of a more action-packed episode. Back then it wasn't unusual of FOX to air episodes out of order according to what they thought would attract more viewers. The result, "shockingly", was the opposite.

As for the show itself, I think it's great and I recommend it to everybody who likes science-fiction. The cast is amazing (Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Morena Baccarin, all of them as regulars!). I don't consider it "the best thing ever", as many seem to do, because it was so short-lived that it didn't have enough time to see its characters grow and evolve. But it was a great ride and the movie, even if it doesn't feel the same, was a satisfying conclusion to the story.

OK well that's REALLY confusing! You're saying that the movie is different than the 2-part episode of the SAME name? Well that I have to blame on the creators... assuming they named it.

Loved the show and movie. The movie is called Serenity as the name of the ship, while the series is called Firefly like the model of the ship... The first episode (part 1 and 2) were called "Pilot" since is the pilot episode as far as I knew and never ever heard of Serenity outside of the ship and the movie. Just watch the movie and the end, and try to follow the "official" order of Wikipedia and Wheedon's since even though the episodes are pretty self-contained, they do show character development and they make references to other cases (and there's ONE particular episode which should NOT be watched out of order).

I've seen it called both. Maybe it was renamed after FOX decided it wouldn't be aired first.
I cannot +1 this enough. One of the best frellin' shows out there.
