I almost forgot about The Invasion of the Mutant Space Bats of Doom. Maybe not the best game, but it's pretty fun and has an awesome title.

After thinking about it, shmups are probably some of the best alien invasion type games.

X-Com: Enemy Unknown for sure, didn't care about the sequels or reboot very much.

monkeydelarge: Have you played the game, The Thing?

Exoanthrope: That's a good one! I had it for the original Xbox when I was younger, it used to scare the hell out of me. The Thing is also one of my favourite movies, and a good example of a movie based game that doesn't suck.
This guy disagrees.

Yeah. It was great on paper, and, oddly, accordingly to a couple of friends. But I never got into it. The broken trust system and the unreliable blood tests (unreliale because of scripted transformations?) killed my enthousiasm.

I still have it on my shelves, and still hope to finish it some day. But it requires someone to convince me that it is better than my impression of it.

I bought it for a few euros when it was on sale, The Thing is also one of my favorite movies but I also knew from reviews this game was pretty bad and the first few levels I had a hard time liking it but I guess it wasn't bad enough to put the game down as I did finished it.
AvP Classic 2000 (aka AvP Gold). It's got not one, but TWO species of aliens, invading places! Also one of the quirkiest and most uniquely fun FPSs of the late 90s.

I played a bit of that a few years ago and loved it to death. I really need to give it another go. The turn-based battles were incredible, and surprisingly tense.

If you like mindless storryless fps games, check out Serious Sam.

I'm not a fan of the genre and I rage-quit the original last time I played it, a decade and a half ago, but for many it's a cult shooter. And the first two parts are available on GOG.

That's the first thing that pops up in my mind when you mention "alien invasion". :)
Also, some day, some day, GOG will provide "Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds". Some day.

Except not.
I really like the free UFO Alien Invasion.
Well maybe not invasion to the Earth. The Zergs (at the begining) had invaded Mar Sara, a Terran (humans) colony. Starcraft is my all time favourite videogame with aliens ^^ My favourite RTS and maybe my favourite all time video game... I don't know... easy at my top 5

Redneck Rampage!
Orion Burger

The one and only game where you must prevent an alien fast food chain from turning the human inhabitants of Earth into a resource for hamburger meat by proving that humans are a sentient species. The gameplay has a Groundhog Day element to it kinda like The Last Express but in a more fun and wacky way.

Please vote on the wishlist:

XCOM all the way! I played Apocalypse for hours at a time, I wish there was more tech to research at the end. I love the new ones and can't wait for 2 to come out.
Would Earthbound count? Because that game was all kinds of awesome.

I wouldn't qualify it as an "alien invasion", as, indeed, the implied subject is the "oh no martians invade earth" sci-fi cliché. On other planets its just, well, intergalactic wars with mere armies invading and occupying other territories. In spaaaace.

BUT

If we decide to go THAT way, then I would mention the "Creeper World" series as the best and most dreadfully oppressive version of "aliens invade alien planets". That's basically the blob conquering the universe as you try to fend it off with turrets and bombers. A sentient growing all-devouring liquid mass ? Beat that, zergs !
HOMM 2-4 and M&M 6-8. Kreegans posing as medieval demons:)

Why, Ubi, why?! Why did you drop the science fiction element from the M&M universe and why are you pretending it never existed?!!
