"Greek firefighters battled large brush and forest fires on the outskirts of Athens and in the country's southern Peloponnese region Friday, where flames forced the evacuation of at least three villages and two summer camps.

Strong winds fanned the forest fire in the Lakonia area, on the tip of the Peloponnese. A coast guard vessel and other boats were attempting to evacuate scores of people trapped on a beach by the fire, but those rescue efforts were being hampered by rough seas.

Local media reported two summer camps and a health center in the seaside town of Neapoli had been evacuated.

One of the seven firefighting planes battling the Lakonia fire had to make an emergency landing, and its two pilots were being transferred to a local hospital for first aid. They were not seriously hurt. Two helicopters, 120 firefighters and nearly 30 soldiers were fighting the blaze.

In Athens, a large brush fire burned across Ymittos hill on the capital's outskirts. Strong winds were helping the flames devour parts of the verdant hillside popular with day-trippers. More than 70 firefighters were battling the blaze, along with local volunteers.

Firefighters were also battling a smaller blaze in Koropi, near Athens, and another on the island of Evia, east of the capital.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Greece has requested help from his country's army and air force, as well as the European emergency response center. Two water-dropping planes had taken off from the country's second largest city of Thessaloniki in the north to assist with the Athens blaze, he said.

"All forces are on alert," Tsipras said, noting that the hot, dry and windy conditions made firefighting more difficult.

Forest and brush fires are common during Greece's hot, dry summers. In 2007, massive forest fires ravaged southern Greece, devastating dozens of villages and killing about 60 people."

Once again, our forests are on fire... People are going crazy, the Fire Dpt. tries to control it with the help of volunteers, a whole island does not have electricity. Another day in hell.. Nothing went well for Greece recently. :/

If I may make a serious post, my heart goes out to you and my best wishes for the safety of everyone concerned and for the well being of your home and your country. Brush fires/forest fires are one of the few things I won't joke about and they can pretty much effect EVERYONE EVERYWHERE.

The only positive is that when it does happen it tends to get people putting aside their petty differences and coming together to help one another, like we should be doing all the time regardless.
I wish I'd have a truckload of water to fly to Greece. And while I'm there, spend lots of cash on the local economy. Right now, not much I can do but wish you luck battling the fires and the crisis.

But I thought...
Blast my mouth, talk of the devil and all that... Not two days ago, i posted in "Choose one of two things" thread, the question: "Greece to be taken down in fire, or Greece to be ruled by corrupt traitors again"?

By the Flames of Agni, my bad luck reached legendary proportions... I doomed 1/3 of my homeplace!

Even though i am horribly wronged, kind of ostracized and treated horribly as i said numerous times in the past, i totally regret even thinking about such a disaster, even as a possibility. And look, it even manifested! And not even ONE of my real enemies or the sh*tpeople that SHOULD, got struck by it; only innocent people.

My mouth. I must seriously take care what i wish for. Or at least try to bargain on targets, not random manifestation. Well, since now i mastered Zai and all, only Zen remains. I hope to seriously rebalance my inner self...

P.S. I know already it was arsonism, but still...

Thanks for the wishes guys! Forest fires are indeed one of the worst things, It is like mass suicide (especially if it's due to arson).

Sorry to read that. First our wheelchair wrong-way driver and now this.
Sorry to hear about the fires. Hopefully the firefighters and other general catastrophy centers can save as many lifes as possible.
It's a shame, especially considering how slow the trees will grow back, let alone somebody getting hurt.
Rumours have it for years, that fires around Athens aren't all due to hot and dry weather though.
Hope the fires are out soon and good luck.We have the same problem
every Summer.
