I just can't belive it how shitty a company must be to legally take down a fan project for a game that is officially discontinued in 2015.And people still buy the crap of these guys... Not a single penny has ever been taken for anything regarding the projects, so there really isn't any reason for this, besides them being jealous :(.Cheers

EDIT:Looks like they even asked them to stop further support for BF2 and BF2142 o.o!??!? This is getting ridicolous.

You are supposed to buy and play their latest BF game, not those old ones. I suggest EA make all games need always online connection to EA's servers so they can shut them down after three years and force you to get the latest game. something wrong with you people who want to keep playing those antiquated games?!

Oh and BF 2 is the only one I own... Already at the third game they started with ******** practises.

At this point, I have to ask...do you have some sort of script or something that adds "Cheers" to the end of every post? I would swear I've never seen a single post you've ever made that doesn't end in that, no matter what the tone of it. o_O

EA has shutdown

That's not news. That's what EA usually does.

Not that I'm defending EA practices, far from it. But every time I see someone doing a remake/fan restoration project on a famous game with a shitty owner (Tomb Raider 2 remake comes to mind for example) I always ask a question: why? Why do they bother? They are clearly a group of very talented people, why can't they just make their own game, even heavily inspired by Battlefield Heroes/Tomb Raider/whatever else. It's not hard to predict that sooner or later they will be forced to throw their project into a garbage bin, why should they let their effort to be wasted? I mean, come on, is it some new iteration of "if I hack FBI website they will offer me a job" dream?! No, they won't. They will put you in a jail/shut down your project. It's so sad to see such a potential wasted...
I know of quite a few mod projects that later on were made into their own games and I think I saw something about one project that went the other way. A mod has foundations to build upon so it is less work, I guess. Ghorpm speaks words of wisdom.

Exactly my thoughts on the subject, why risk having your project get shut down and losing all your hard work? Just make your own original game which is inspired by said game instead.
At the very least, more of these fan projects should learn that in order to have an optimum survival, shut your trap until your project is already out, because by then, it is too late.

The best way is to change the name of the project so that it isn't the same IP but keep the feel. Like we did with Birth of the Federation -> Birth of the Empires. There is no reference to Star Trek so nobody can complain even if the game is a copycat.
Remember that EA got 2 time in a row the 'Worst Company in America' award. maybe they want to win another more.
Wasn't there a notice on the front page before the legal shenanigans, where the admin explicitly mentioned that they had asked DICE's permission before going ahead with the BF2, 2142 revive project and got the A-OK . Unless, it's that massive player count which forced EA to take such a step.

Funny thing is at the time of the gamespy shutdown, EA had issued a statement,' We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.'

It must be one big 'technical hurdle' .

Had played bf2 a couple of months ago and was surprised at the numerous servers and player numbers. Enjoyed it a lot and wanted to play this week until I saw this news.
