etb: It does not sound you did much development, did you?
At college I had to choose between getting enough sleep or finishing my programming assigments at max grades, I chose the latter then, but there never as any illusion on my head that I should even try to pursue a career as a professional programmer.

etb: You show valid points, but everything you said would be easy to implement also with directories stored (correctly) in the user folders.
As long as the games don't have a plain text configuration file at their installation folder where we can set the path for the rest of the settings, there will be problems at trying to have saves from multiple copies of a game with different sets of mods installed on them separate from each other.

etb: I like your "100% steamless" nice to meet you! I was afraid to be alone...
I never got around playing Counter Strike without bots because just when I got tired of them, Steam was introduced and I refused to install it just to be able to patch a mod. When Half-Life 2 was announced to require online activation I predicted that eventually client based DRM would not be cracked out of a game, but some specific version of the client would be targeted to allow running a certtain game. This would make it too cumbersome to future-proof my games even if the client could be set to offline mode without ever logging in with the service, so at first I decided to not play the game at the moment and only buy it after I can be sure that a proper crack has been released for it.

But I somehow managed to forgot to even try to crack HL2 long enough to reach to the point where I no longer even wish to play it until I can either buy it officially DRM-free or it eventually becomes abandonware. If it is a game worth playing for it will stand the test of time and otherwise I am better of by not wasting my time on it at all.

With that concept the idea of making a game so good that people will tolerate the DRM will never work on me, as my resolve to wait only gets stronger the better a game is. At best I can allow myself to play some F2P games with friends, as the latter are (yet) impossible to future-proof and without them around I would get bored with the grinding almost immediately and go back to playing single player games.
