AstralWanderer: Be aware that you could be missing out on significant gameplay improvements.

For the Doom series (including spinoffs like Heretic and Hexen), GZDoom offers significant improvements over plain DOS (or DOSBox, any version) such as widescreen support, better MIDI music, surround sound and the option of higher resolution textures - check the game-specific forums for more details (such as this Doom Tweak Guide).
I prefer the DOS look & feel in most cases.

In what way you mean the mods have "better" MIDI music?

General Midi can be used without any problems in DosBox, all you need is a synthesizer (and don't use the crap that windows has integrated), use the soundfont of your choice (Arachno is good for Doom).

arphaksad: Thank you but I'm only interested in running these old games in MS-DOS mode. Looking back with nostalgia

OK. Thanks. I'll look GZDoom.

arphaksad: Looking to get several classic DOS games that I'd like to play on in MS-DOS mode on my Windows 95 PC.
Interested in Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Dune 2, Duke Nuke etc. I read on Vogons that GOG is the place to get old DOS games. I'd appreciate help with this.
While most of GOG's DOSBox using DOS releases seem to be quite easy to get working on real hardware, sometimes GOG likes to take pointless shortcuts like mounting the different, but identical CD images for Ultima Underworld I & II despite there being no CD checks preventing them from dumping both of those games to disk. And then there may be more cases like Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, where the game may actually require a crack to work without mounting the CD image unless you are able to burn that image to a disc in a way that even old optical drives can read it.

To each their own - however I found that Heretic looked so much better with upscaled textures, that I would consider the original DOS version near-unplayable.

I was referring to improved SoundFonts (Musyng Kite is my top pick as noted in the Doom tweak thread linked above), but yes, you can use them in DOSBox also.

ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: Don't forget they're targeting Windows 95, which was not exactly the best for DOS.

SimCity 2000 demanding VESA or better drivers, Wing Commander needing special memory tricks, System Shock controlling like a computer workstation on wheels...oh, and Hades help you if you want a joystick.
Hehe. Maybe I remember it being worse than it was, but yes, Windows was also fun with drivers and blue screen of death (I think I sneezed so hard once I shook the table just a tiny bit and the computer blue-screened itself out of the room). 98-ME and eventually XP was better an more stable, but yes, since Win95 was built upon DOS it would've been better to boot back into DOS mode again since it used up a lot of the remaining resources. Dune 2 f.ex. wouldn't run properly either otherwise.

Falcon 4 also needed to have a special memory boot-up sequence. And in those days we didn't have internet, let alone lots of magazines about this stuff. At least not here in Norway. All that time I spent getting the game to run (had to phone a friend) and the disk eventually had some troubles with a few sectors. Nothing lost actually because I remember the game to be excruciating boring. XD

Right, joysticks. Bought a complete package with Descent, 3D card, sound card + a joystick. I gave mine away eventually and haven't touched one since (outside of arcades that is). Wasn't worth the trouble. Nowadays I just plug in a controller via USB and it just sticks.

Speaking of Heretic HD, Hexen has something similar via GzDoom:
