... or is that still mostly up to Activision, still involved as publisher on Steam?

"Wester said that Paradox paid cash for the acquisition, and notes that Vampire is particularly exciting as it is “the world’s second best-selling role-playing..."

i seriously doubt that latter bit...

I can easily believe it. Back in the mid 90's it was huge in the roleplaying circles. While there are many other great games at the time, none had the following of WoD.

WoD had such a big following I have no idea what it is!

The pen and paper game? Absolutely, it has a huge following. The PC game? It was a great seller, but not that great.

World of Darkness is the PnP setting that served as a base for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.
Well, actually I think it is quite a bit more than that, but I’ll let the experts explain this better than me ;)

World of Darkness (WoD) is the universe that the Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Forsaken, and Mage: The Awakening PnP RPGs take place in. The old WoD (prior to 2003) included Vampire: The Masquerade (the basis for Bloodlines), Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Wraith: The Oblivion, Hunter: The Reckoning and quite a few other spinoff games, none of which are still published.
Hm, maybe if Paradox bought the rights to both Redemption and Bloodlines from Activision, IF they are willing to sell. >_>

The depth of the original world of darkness was breath taking.

The amount of lore and background they researched and created makes something like Lord of the Ring look like it had been scrawled on a napkin.

Apart from the original jump from 7 to 13 clans when they expanded the universe I can not think of any major oversight in the mythos behind the world they created. It was wonderfully woven and an absolute joy to unweave.
