tremere110: It looks like Transport Tycoon with the Martian tileset from the Transport Tycoon World Editor.
Thank you, but it's not that.

Lin545: Throwing wild guesses:

- Ascendancy
- Starcontrol 3

Both are not dedicated to one planet though and not to Mars.

edit: my brain malfunctions sometimes, needs replacement :3
Thank you, but it's not either of them.

ncameron: Again not Mars, and a civ sim rather than a colony one, but the first thing I thought of when looking at the image was Alpha Centauri.
Thank you, but it's not that.

I don't think it's this game either. It's an educational game:

Found it! It's called Ares / Planet: The New Frontier by Kimbrosoft which is probably defunct.

I'm very glad that you finally found the game. I never heard neither the game nor its developer before. How did you find it?

I was browsing 2001 version of ApeZone.com (an unrelated contemporary game developer) which had links to some shareware sites. I got inspired to do a google search for "starships unlimited v2.3" a version of the game that I played around the same time. The results lead me to a shareware site (http://www.softviewer.com/comments.php?id=3512&mode=soft). I navigated to the Games/Strategies category, sorted it by date, and, by chance, it's still listed among the oldest entries (http://www.softviewer.com/download_detail.php?softid=2499). Then I searched the developer's site (kimbrosoft.com) on the Internet Archive.

That's really cool! Persistence does pay off, really glad you found it! Shame they went out of biz, but thats sadly the usual outcome for a soft company. See sirtech, black isle etc. Nothing is forever, sadly.
