(I'm new. I'm buying games but haven't played them yet because I need to upgrade my PC.)

I see that there are often different versions of games with various DLC. What is soundtrack DLC?
If I buy a version of a game without soundtrack DLC, will it still have in-game music?
What is the point of soundtrack DLC? Is it just to enable the music to be had as separate files to play wherever I like?

Can someone explain this to me so that I can better decide which versions of games to buy from the weekly staff picks?

Feel free to take the piss out of my level of ignorance if it entertains you!

You do not. The soundtrack is in case you want to listen to game music when you are not playing the game.

No, you don't need it. You can just buy the normal version and you'll have full in-game music.
The soundtrack DLC is only good if you want to listen to it outside of gameplay.

- You will still have in-game music.

- Most likely yes, and you can support the game with extra money.

It means you can get the soundtrack as a separate mp3 download, so you can listen to it outside the game. Basically like separately sold soundtrack CDs.

A lot of the older games also come with downloadable soundtracks as an extra, it's only all the newer indie games that decided to sell their extra content as DLC, even though it's technically not part of the actual game.
Thank you everyone. You've put my mind at rest. I've a lot to learn, but it should be an easy journey with people like you around!

I've never downloaded a game's music files separately from he game just because, if I like the game, I will play it so much that the music will be in my head while I sleep, shower, drive, just anytime.
In many cases the game's music is available as part of the game download anyway, and getting the official soundtrack means one of several things:

The default format is something other than .mp3 standard - .ogg seems to be common.

The soundtrack includes higher quality renditions of the music.

The soundtrack includes tracks that weren't part of the game and/or were different in-game (dubbed with voice, only partially used, etc).

Happens with me sometimes.
Usually when I could not pass a specific level, I keep playing that level in my dream again and again..
It goes away as soon as I finish it.

And you don't need game soundtrack for in game music (what is this real life?) and don't buy that DLC if it only gives you soundtrack.
NO. They're just game goodies. If you like a game soundtrack and its soundtrack is available as a purchasable DLC, then you can buy it and listen to it in your audio/media player. Some GOG games offer their soundtrack as free bonus/goodies.
