It's true! The Steam Halloween Sale has a huge banner which makes a connection between VR gamers and zombies:

http://store.steampowered.com/sale/halloween/

For posterity, the banner is attached below! (I compressed it from 916 KB to only 194 KB. It seems like Steam suck at .png compression)

The idea is rather obvious: VR players looks pretty much like the stereotypical zombie, waving their hand around, and turning their head, obviously lost to the world. Possibly, they smell the same too.

Maybe the illustration depicts a scenario where a VR virus turns people into zombies? In that case, the undead would likely not have enough intelligence to take off their HMD and would walk forever around inside "Minesweeper VR" or whatever experience they happened to be playing. Why isn't this a movie already???

is that was that is? I thought they were holding slippers.
*rolls eyes so hard they fall out of their sockets* Gamers: Making mountains out of itty bitty dirt piles.
BTW, news flash:

WE ARE ZOMBIES! :P

Not all, but most of us, myself included, either hang out in here all day or game, with little else to interfere. We drool at the newest releases, the newest updates, the sales. We stumble around blindly, groaning incoherently, our endless thirst for games and gaming dictating our every sad move.

This is why you always keep some alcohol wipes nearby the VR headset. It starts out as pinkeye, and then it's the Zombie Apocalypse.
That's a really ugly banner...

The current frontpage banner here is actually pretty nice.

I thought we already had that with the smartphones...

I am very bad at this, and always get the wrong end of the stick - is the OP serious?

Are you sure it's not simply a metaphor of how VR gaming is already a dead and rotting corpse.

I don't know, I feel like it's missing "Sad!" at the end.
Thank God i'm immune against to VR crap .
Not sure if serious... thinks not. But, just in case: it's a Hallowe'en sale, so depicting zombies (or monsters in general) as gamers in the promotional artwork isn't a big surprise, is it? It's certainly not intended to imply anything about VR gamers.
Well, they always flock to it and consume it before dying off in disappointment. That's one way to allegory it.

Or...They're both brainless gimmicks that nobody knows how to use effectively.

Dead and rotting would imply this is the first time it died. This is what, the third revival of VR since it's conception?

In swtor land, there was an uprising over how they were going to name a server "Hot Prospect".

For those of you who don't pay attention to the Star Wars universe, it's the name of one of the ships in the comics.

I am curious. Do controllers used in VR setups look like that normally? Like look like Wii controllers to me.

You're immune to VR Crabs? Lucky you! I'm not, I can tell you that much. Pro tip: NEVER buy a "pre-owned" Kiroo Onyx, ever...

To me, it look very much like a VIVE controller. Ah, so they're suggesting that people using VIVE are brainless zombies, unlike the superior RIFT users? They may be on to something. Of course, tinyE suggested it was a pair of slippers, and who can say which interpretation of an artwork is the right one? The "pair of slippers" interpretation gives the piece more of an edge, a bit of avant-garde flavour.
