john_hatcher: There is at least one other thread (about Galaxy being forced on users ... yeah, I know, there are still enough threads about that), that „disappeared“ yesterday after I posted something in it and my best buddy and bff „tinye“ replied to it.
I just assume that it got deleted by a moderator, which would sum up my picture of him (or her) for being not so good with critical comments.
The thread went off topic and people began to flame each other. As with every thread in which this happens, it was locked for an hour and then deleted.

toxicTom: I think locking is fine, but deleting is kinda shit for various reasons. For instance googling certain usernames (with "site:gog.com linko90") should also turn up the troll threads and posts so I can check and see if you're worth answering too or if I'm wasting my time and probably will get yelled at ;-)
Leaving threads that display the worst of what people can offer is hardly a step in the right direction, even more so when it's littered with people abusing each other.

john_hatcher: I got some remarks towards this.

a) Why do you delete these threads? Locking, as toxicTom says, is more than enough, if there are no illegal things in it. What about ... if you delete all threads regarding "galaxy is not optional", you can always answer the next upcoming thread with "you are alone, no one ever had a problem with that". Hope I could make my point clear.
b) If this specific thread was "flaming each other", I'll most probably point you to some other threads in the near future.
Not all the GOG Galaxy threads have been deleted, there are 2 in the first few pages alone.

As for your second point, feel free to. As other users have, and I have followed this up with moderation. This is not a new process, I have done this since I started here. If users can't restrain themselves from going off topic or turning a post into an insult sword fight, and the thread does not provide any long-term service, the thread will be locked and deleted. The users who took part in said insults will also be contacted and met with moderation.

Edit - It's quite clear I moderate the forums.

Breja: Can't you just delete the offending posts? I mean, what if a thread is full of valuble inforomation, or answers someone's problem, and then a troll or two appear and bam! the whole thread is gone? Hardly sounds right. Sounds like an easy way for the trolls to cause even greater havoc.

Also, I honestly have no idea what that "worst of what people can offer" in that thread about Galaxy was. I agree some people responded to the OP in a unwarranted, hostile way, but nothing so bad as to make the thread deserve deletion.
Please see my comment as it clearly underlines posts with lasting service will not be deleted. As for the post in question, it was the 3rd of it's type on the page. And yet again, we had the same arguing about 'DRM/Steam' etc, but only this time people began to get much more firey with their replies. Hence the lock/deleting of the topic.

As for 'just deleting the troll replies' the fact is, most aren't trolls. They're regular users who for some reason have bouts of uncivil arguing. Deleting posts non-stop does little to halt the behavior.

InkPanther: I can see that discussion has moved a bit from the post I was replying to. And folks have raised the same objections I have.

So in short: please, reconsider deleting closed topics. If you find some posts so egregious they warrant a deletion, remove them but leave the thread.
Noted.

I will also point this out as it is now becoming a trend -

I said users could PM me if they wanted to talk or wanted to share a view on the forums. This is not an invite to hurl abuse at me in private messages.

The forums can not improve if you spend a fair chunk of your time simply hurling abuse at members in threads or PMs, it's not acceptable.

mk47at: Well, the thing is, you have to expect that the tone gets harsher if you choose not to reply to a polite version and just delete it because it was in a thread that was conveniently derailed, locked and deleted after an hour.
I don't expect conspiracy theories and abuse. Locking and deleting off-topic threads derailed by users insulting each other is not a new process. As I've explained to you personally in reply to your DM, and have explained in this thread.
