amok: there is an ocean of difference between "can't" and "wont"

If you really want to:
Descent 1 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/273570/
Descent 2 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/273580/
Descent 3 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/273590/
Descent Underground - http://store.steampowered.com/app/360950/

so you can play them still, if you really want to.

amrit9037: Not going to play it on Steam for sure.
so it is "wont" not "cant". The "never" is self-inflicted. Your choice, then.
Unfortunate for sure. I'm not interested in them, but hopefully they return soon!
Phew, luckily I got them some time ago.

Me too. They're still in my library fortunately. To those who bought the descent games before removal can still redownload them from their libraries.

EDIT: Who owns the Descent IP now? Did Interplay sell the IP to Volition or Descent studios?

Damn. I've had it on my wishlist for a while. I love Descent 3, but I've never played 1 or 2.

I should have bought it when it was last in sale.
My time on GOG started with Descent! Seeing Descent on GOG is why I came here to begin with. Hopefully they will return.

I have seen Descendent Studios name dropped a few times in the thread - I'm not associated in any way with them other than as a regular backer, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Descendent Studios only has rights to use the name "Descent', as that is the only thing that Interplay owns of the franchise. DS has stated publicly that they want to get rights to use game assets but were still working on negotiating that deal. Also, they do want to release to GOG but since the game is still under development they are holding off on that move, so far releasing only on their website and Steam Early Access.

Long story short. 3D Realms no longer owns the Duke Nukem franchise and it has passed in the hands of Gearbox. The 3D Realms Anthology on Steam will be removed on 31 December and there are speculations that it's being removed because the rights to the Duke Nukem will change hands at that time.
Ah, will see what that drops to for the Steam sale. I'll pick it up before then if it has a good discount. Even with them being removed I won't be dropping $40 for a bunch of games to sit in my backlog right now.
What a shame. Here's hoping they make it back here.

You can also buy it as part of the Killer Bundle 6 on Bundle Stars for a whooping $5.

Well, luckily I have them. Haven't played them - just a bit of nostalgia for that original game 20 years ago.

Still stinks. Hopefully they make it back.
You know, this thing is becoming alarmingly common on GOG these days. Say what you will about Steam, but games very rarely get removed there, but here it's becoming a common occurrence.

EDIT: Wonder if it has anything to do with Descent Underground, perhaps Interplay sold the Descent license entirely?

Very rarely? Nah.

Konrad: Due to changing hands and in-flux legal agreements, we just had to remove Descent 1+2 & Descent 3 + Mercenary from our catalog, effective immediately.

We do want to apologize for not being able to give everyone more of a heads-up, and we will be doing our best to bring them back.
All the legal brouhaha that goes on behind the scenes must be maddening for GOG. Especially for the age these games are at. There must be some sort of patent war (sorry, more like ownership rights) going on and there was a cease and desist ordered. *sigh*

When you compare that list to the number of games on Steam...

It's still not very rare, though.

And it's not even common on GOG. Only 4 games were removed this year, one of them also removed on Steam (Scratches) and it's a possibility that the Descent games might be removed as well (or at least change the publisher's name).
