Maybe so. I don't generally buy games based on whether they have famous (voice) actors in them, but I admit I am sometimes surprised to find out when some voice in a game indeed was some big-name actor. Like Ron Perlman has apparently been in quite many games even I've played (e.g. all the Fallout games apparently, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter etc.). Probably I just missed his name in the credits...

As I recently watched the movie "Her", I didn't realize by mere sound that the sensual voice of the computer AI (Samantha) was Scarlett Johansson, it just dawned to me later. I don't know if it was good or bad I didn't know it while watching the movie, maybe it was good because otherwise I would have had the image of Scarlett saying all those things, and not some unknown AI. I preferred watching the movie so that "Samantha" (the computer AI) was faceless.

1. The games are stealth games, and I *hate* it when stealth appears in other games, particularly its implementation in Zelda games (starting with Ocarina of Time) where it's functionally equivalent to having to avoid invisible instant death bullets. (I would hope that the stealth sequences in the Metal Gear Solid are done better since they're the focus of the game, but I am still not interested in playing a game focused on something I dislike in other games.)

2. The games are story heavy, with lots of unskippable non-interactive cutscenes. This is the sort of thing that turned me off of modern Final Fantasy games (starting with FF6, but getting worse in FF7).

Hence, unless the game is *very* different (as in, isn't even the same type of game) and, of course, is released DRM-free, I will not be getting it.

(I haven't actually played any of the Metal Gear Solid games, for the record.)
What a shame.

I really enjoy stealth games, such as (most of) the Splinter Cell games, but I don't like forced stealth segments in otherwise non stealth games either, especially if I can't just kill everything in open combat and move on.

I've only played the first Metal Gear Solid and The Phantom Pain (and Metal Gear Rising, but it might not count), long time since I played the first one, but for TPP, you should be able to skip any and all cutscenes, and blowing everything up with a tank is a viable strategy.

CharlesGrey: That's just the trend of the AAA gaming industry -- everything has to be bigger and "better" than previous releases. Full orchestral scores, famous actors/VAs, huge open game worlds, photo-realistic graphics, long FMV sequences... Even CDPR hired famous actors such as Charles Dance for Witcher 3.

Some of these elements can benefit certain types of games, but I'm not sure it's worth the bloated budgets and the negative side effects that come with that.

I can appreciate all the bells and whistles, but I think games need to be entertaining to play, first and foremost. And often low-res pixel graphics, or blocky polygon characters are enough to achieve that goal.
I can appreciate games with pretty graphics too, but I think AAA publishers and developers should try to cap development cost at a certain level, so they don't have to bemoan the fact that their latest game failed to sell more than 500 million copies in the first 20 nanosecs, and maybe stop relying on pre-orders and season passes so much.

I really wouldn't object if we got a 2011~2012 looking game from a AAA publisher, so long as it runs well for the graphics, and is fun to play.

I think much of the hype surrounding Death Stranding is directly related to the epic failure of Konami shutting down P.T. and Silent Hills. Gamers around the world were mystified and excited by the idea of visionary film maker, Guillermo del Toro, and visionary game designer, Hideo Kojima, working together on a project. When it was suddenly shut down, people were upset and confused. Konami seems to be committing corporate suicide and gamers were left pining for a game that would never be.

When Kojima finally appeared, in spite of previous shut-outs by Konami, at E3 this year with the first teaser for Death Stranding, people were understandably excited. When Norman Reedus, who was supposed to star in Silent Hills, shows up in the teaser, people were overjoyed. Could this mean that the project now lived on in a new form? With Guillermo del Toro appearing in the new teaser, people were shocked again. Could this mean that the two creators would finally get the change to work together on a game? The appearance of popular actor Mads Mikkelson is just icing on the cake for fans of his.

While we don't yet know what the game is about or how it will play, the simple fact of Kojima and del Toro possibly working together again is reason enough for many people to get excited.

I would say it's a breath of fresh air as well, not having another metal gear game and getting a new IP is amazing to see cause everything we are getting is so much continues of other games and it gets old fast.

Honestly, Kojima has wanted to step away from making Metal Gear games for a long time. He desperately wanted to make a game for the Wii when that was blowing up in popularity. He also likes the idea of the technology in the DS/3DS handhelds, but Konami basically shackled him to a chair to make one Metal Gear game after the other. So, I'm sure that Kojima himself is just as happy as you are to be working on something new. ^_^

That is a game that has this "Fuck those corporate suits!" message enbedded in it, made by a well known developer often put on a pedestal by fans, leading many people to hype it to stratospheric levels, takes many years to come out, develops an anti-hype backlash and people become eager to tear down the pedestal they themselves created, leaving the game doomed.


Really, it's all Kojima's fault. Releasing trailers for a game before he even decided which engine he's going to use? He's just shooting himself in the foot.

Until Kojima opens a Kickstarter campaign, I don't think it's fair to compare the two. Sure, there will be a lot of hype. But I don't think Kojima is going to disappoint anyone beyond potentially delaying the game a few times. Of course, all we can do is make baseless predictions right now. Only time will tell.

Good post, that sounds quite accurate. It's likely a mix of "FucKonami", and at the same time people being excited about getting a new Kojima ( and Del Toro? ) game, which may or may not turn out to be similar to the canceled Silent Hill project.

While I'm not generally one to buy into the hype, I also don't see a reason for doom & gloom just yet. I think the gaming community would be a much nicer place if people could learn to have more realistic expectations.

Of course, realistically, it's probably as you say. The game might turn out to be great, but if it disappoints then gamers are going to start yet another massive shitstorm, similar to No Man's Sky.

I never got what's supposed to be so great about his longwinded, weird, and often just random stories and plot-points.

Frankly, I've actually yet to play a game just for its narrative. As much as some people revere video game writers like Chris Avellone, I typically find them average or even coming across as trying too hard. Hell, most average books tend to be better written than the "best" and often rather generic game scripts. Granted, a decent background story is nice to have, but they tend to exist to merely facilitate gameplay, and I'm totally fine by that. Just don't try to hail them as the best thing ever.

When people create their own image of what the game should be in their heads as the next great thing that will revolutionize gaming, the result will always disappoint them because it will be inevitably different. The hype he's creating now will bite him in the ass five years from now when the game finally comes out.

Great minds think alike, huh?

I have my issues with Kojima, but I doubt the game will be bad, it will probably be at the very least interesting, but hype can be poisonous, and he's playing right into it.

Another unfair comparison. What made people salty about NMS was the outright lies that Sean Murray told during press interviews and Q&A's and the visual differences and missing content seen in promotional trailers compared to the released product.

Even in regards to Mighty No.9, the majority of people who were mad about the game were angry due to the repeated delays (sometimes less than 2 weeks before an expected release date) and, again, the visual differences between what was shown during the KS campaign and what the final product looked like. This, of course, was further punctuated by the fact that Inafune already had millions of dollars of fans' money in his pocket.

Thus far, all we have of Death Stranding are a couple of teaser trailers and some possible cast announcements. There just isn't enough to go off of to make the types of comparisons you are making.
