kbauer: Hello,
Does anyone know what GOG’s policy is on changing currency rates and pre-orders?
For example, Cyberpunk 2077 in CAD is 79.99. That’s pretty fair to the USD price of 59.99 based on current rates. If there is a big move in the currency (such as the USD declining for example), would GOG automatically adjust and refund the appropriate difference? Or is it incumbent upon us the purchaser to cancel our pre-order and repurchase the game (in USD if they don’t match local rates)?
Thanks!
nightcraw1er.488: It would be up to you if at all possible. To be fair though, it’s a bit cheeky. You are happy to pay the money at that time for that product, stick with that decision. Gog however do have a very good refund policy and it’s open to abuse like this. You wouldn’t for instance take your car back to the dealer and ask them to refund the monetary difference between when you brought it and now. A deals a deal, but as I say, the refund policy is there.
Thank you for your response.
While that doesn’t actually answer the auto FX adjust question, I appreciate your answer (and the economic rational relating to the individuals purchasing preference, which is absolutely a valid point).
Fundamentally the car analogy is slightly off IMO because the car is used vs new at your refund point. Let me rephrase it: if you pre-purchased a car for pickup in 5 months, only to find out in 3 months after you purchased it that the price has dropped (to keep it consistent we can say it’s FX costs, but it could be any reason). Would you want a refund on the difference before delivery? Or would you happily take ownership in the future of an equal product that cost more than the market norm?
To me it fundamentally goes to one’s own altruistic interests in the developers. And everyone can have their own opinions there. The question that I’m curious in getting answered is do we need to actively refund/buy the product in such a situation or does the company automatically normalize the payment (does GOG do that)?
As for the car analogy (and most durable goods), I suspect if such a case for the mass market existed the company would automatically normalize payments for all. After all, this is a situation where there’s no need to preorder since the product is “shipped” (downloaded) without delay.
