Laugh it up now but you're both going to look foolish if there's an actual game called General Discussion.

Yep, the link in the library is broken and points to the general forum. It's the same with a few other games as well.

Unfortunately Spore is famous for these crashes.

Generally you can try two things.

1. Run the game in compatibility mode for Win XP SP3 and as administrator (right click the Spore icon => Properties => Compatibility tab; Choose the mode and check the box for 'Run this program as an administrator')

2. Reduce the game's graphics cache
Reducing the size of your graphics cache in Settings->Gaphics Options to 512 or 256 MB may help with crashes or if you have limited hard disk space.

Go to the Spore directory:

In Windows XP
\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Application Data\SPORE

In Vista
\Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\SPORE

The Application Data directory may be hidden. To display hidden files:

In the menu Tools->Folder Options->View
check "Show Hidden Files and Folders"

Delete the file GraphicsCache.package.

Restart Spore.
