So i want to know how (and/or what files) to download onto an external. I see that i can browse and select my external as the destination, but when it says the game will install, and have automatic updates, etc, all things i cant do on an external it gives me pause.

Download the installers (larger games come in multiple parts). Also download the extras if you want them.

If your browser does not normally ask where to save, you can probably right-click and select "save link as" (in Firefox) or such, and direct it to your external drive. Otherwise you can move the files out of your downloads folder.
