It's been a while since I did a Not So Humble Steam Giveaway. Perhaps too long.

Dungeon Defenders on Steam is up for grabs to anyone who wants to enter. Simply reply with "Bones" if you are interested.

This ends in two days. The winner will be randomly selected. Be forewarned: the code is kind of old.

Edit: Disregard convincing me on KotOR. I've been thoroughly dissuaded.

ZaineH: What about KotOR?
Well you haven't really given much of an idea what you're looking for. But, sure, let's sum it up spoiler-free for you:
It opens like a genuine Star Wars movie. It's fast-paced and personal like a documentary, but without the shaky-cam. Great voice acting, good writing, all the Star Wars music you need for that 190 proof nostalgia. And you have to work for it, but when you get your lightsaber, and draw it...that snap-hiss, the blur as it spins, that throbbing hum... you're right there in Star Wars. Right in the middle of it.

Plus, you know - droids, blasters, Twi'lek assassins, casinos, space ships, Wookiees, killing people with their own deflected blaster fire, Force lightning, and Goddamn HK-47.

Oh, just get it already. It's genius.
Not in, but I'll comment anyways.

I've only played the Xbox (original) Kotor, and my impression of the game was very much Jade Empire. Game's linear, and moral choices only draw you between good, evil, and neutral.

Kotor uses a D20 system for everything, so if you played D&D 3rd edition, NWN, or something similar the system will look fairly familiar to you with feats.

The only gripe I had probably was one race was overused and badly retextured in the game... and the sound sample of her talking was WAY too repetitive.

Although it has RPG elements and choices, most of them don't matter as the story progresses forward regardless.

I'm not sure how well I'm selling the game, but in my mind the game was a solid OK, and nothing more than that. If you're big on Star Wars you'll love it regardless, if not then being vaguely familiar with the first 3 movies (4-6) is all you'll need to play the game.
Not in.

I just wanted to say that KOTOR will give you a beard if you don't have one or make your existing beard grow 6 pick abs if you do.
Bones. I'm in, I do like me some tower defense.

So KOTOR... I guess I'm going to be one of the few dissenting voices, but it didn't really "do it" for me. I haven't completely given up on it yet, as I've only played maybe the first 3-4 hours or so and many say it picks up after that, but what I did play was pretty disappointing and these days I have a hard time justifying pouring dozens of hours into a game I may not actually enjoy, especially when I found the first few hours pretty underwhelming.

Some things that turned me off:

* The control scheme seemed very much setup for consoles. It's not free-range of motion, it's somewhere inbetween as you have to move/lock the screen and then use the pointer to select items.

* Dialogue choices seemed so polarized and unnatural -- you must choose to either be a goody-two-shoes boyscout or an obnoxious asshat, with very little middleground. Also, the way the dialogue for the "tutorial" part of it plays out is really patronizing and non-sensical as it doesn't fit into the narrative at all.

* I don't mind turn-based, strategy combat. But something about the method in which it plays out as half-action / half-turn based and entirely based on dice rolls didn't quite sit with me. It's sort of like a middle ground that tries to appease all interested parties, but which I found did not do either aspect all that well.

But saying all that, I've only 80% abandoned it and 20% of me says I need to at least meet HK-47 and try some lightsaber combat before writing it off completely... and also to not feel like a gaming poser because like 100% of gamers seem to worship the game.

Not in - I'm on the 'Orcs must die' side of the OMD vs. DD schism.

I quite liked Kotor when it came out. Tried to play it again a few years ago and it felt like it was showing its age.

Not that I don't show my age, but then I never appealed to millions of people in the first place.
Let me convince you against it:

KOTOR
KOTOR 2

Mild spoilers between the lines.
Bones! I'm in, thanks and +1!

Never played KOTOR myself, but I\m thinking about it, because everyone says it's the best single player experience in the Star Wars universe and I have a question for it too, does it ends on a cliffhanger because, you see, there is KOTOR ll but no one is talking about it ?
+1, NOT in

But Knights Of The Old Republic has been a fun game to play. Think of it as Neverwinter Nights in space, with Jedis and Siths. Oh, and you can make your own light saber.

It's been a long time since I finished it but as far as I remember the ending is satisfying and not necessarily a cliffhanger. Though I think it's kind of open ended.

It's a pretty damned good star wars experience for sure, especially if you don't mind Bioware's take on rpgs. If in addition you're a star wars fan you'll probably have an awesome time :)

It doesn't end on a cliffhanger as far as I can remember, and I don't think the stories in the two games have anything directly to do with each other. From what I understand KOTOR II experienced some difficulties later in its development, or they simply ran out of time, that caused a lot of content to be cut or not completed. If I recall correctly, some of this was noticeable in the game itself, such as one facilty that I couldn't fully explore and I think even one or two character story arcs left incomplete. Thankfully a community patch has since been developed that restores a lot of the cut content.
Thanks for the replies guys, so KOTOR 1 seems like a must have, and KOTOR 2 as a good game thanks to the community patch.
Not in.

I don't know if this will convince you but I didn't even like Star Wars before the Kotor series. I still don't think any of the movies are great. But now I know that if you give it to good writers anything becomes enjoyable.

And now I know there's an expanded universe (which Disney denies to use) of Star Wars, wonderful books, charismatic characters and god the dialogs in the second game! They would put George Lucas to shame (And I think they did)

The series would easily be grand Mass Effect like but Bioware being Bioware fucked it up with an online game.

With the restored content mod I personally think KOTOR II is the better game. At any rate, these games are among the best purchases I've ever made, and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Edit: not in. :)

Thanks to all of those with advice on Knights of the Old Republic. I've decided against it.

The Giveaway still stands. Feel free to enter for Dungeon Defenders.
BONES.

Thanks!
