I've been getting sick and tired of Steam for quite some time now due to various reasons, but one concerns Anime style games and Valve's heavy handed censorship so I thought I'd support GOG and start getting those games that I could from the store. My issue seems to be that I can't get two of the games I was after on GOG because of reasons.

The two games in question are Evenicle and True Love 95. Both are available on GOG and Steam, but I can only view and purchase the games from Steam in my Country (Australia) as GOG won't allow it.

I emailed GOG support and their response was this:

It's the publisher's request that those game not be sold to customers with an Australian IP. Either that's BS, someone clicked the wrong box or Valve are in the wrong and Evenicle and True Love 95 really aren't meant to be sold here I don't know.

Simply use a VPN.
And before anyone says "b-b-but VPNs violate GOG's ToS..."
The GOG staffer (Falka) basically gave you the same advice (as clear as s/he could do that in his/her role as a GOG representative):
"I'm afraid that as long as your IP points to Australia, you won't be able to purchase them."
Travel, buy games, come home, play : ) Call it traveling games.
Ah, but you might be wondering: Why can't GOG simply comply with international standards?
Good question.
I know people have used a VPN for these things before on Steam and GOG even Netflix, but I've never had any success with that.

I just tried a few minutes ago using NordVPN and connected to a US server, checked the IP was in the US and tried GOG again. Still nothing. I tried logging out and even tried on Edge, but no luck.

I feel you buddy. I finally tried Proton VPN (the free version - not the browser add on but the installer) and i checked my IP with: https://ip.me/
It did work. There are only 5 countries (Japan, USA, Romania, Netherlands and Polen for the free version). I could see that it was working since galaxy2 updated the pricing (but only after i visited my shopping cart once!!!), then i switched to my currency and was ready to go and see all the adapted prices and games. Interesting experience.

My goal though wasn't shopping but finally trying this whole VPN thing out - who knows if it will become a must have at some point in the future.

Good luck :-)

Which international standards are those?

Oh, quite simple: As a member state of the European Union, they could give over to a proper verification system instead of an invisible curtain made of glass beads.

I doubt Steam would sell it if it was RC'd here. Chances are it's been given the kibosh by the developer/publisher because they didn't want to jump through the licensing hoops to allow it to be sold to AU customers. We've seen it before on Epic - the game gets geoblocked over here until the paperwork gets sorted (and in at least one instance, not quickly enough for people to legitimately claim the free game from EGS - see "911 Operator").

GOG is not a member state of the European Union, just based in it, but again, which standards were you referring to?

Ask a friend from outside the country to gift the game to you.

I doubt they'll block activation for you/
I haven't tried the following, but it might work, as gifting to me in the past has.

Use a VPN or something like the VPN in the Opera browser. That should allow you to find and see the game(s) in question, then Gift it to yourself. Then claim using the Gift code. Of course, you might lose your money, so there is some risk. That said, you could probably do a refund.
