Crewdroog: My parents' cat will stare at one particular place on a wall in their house and then attack it. He has been doing this for years, so he has made a mark into the drywall. Like an idiot, I have watched him and seen nothing there.
There's a lot more color spectrums than we can see. Might try shining a blacklight on the area or washing it well. But if there's a large enough hole in the wall then probably cover it over with something, even a sheet of cardboard will help for a while...

HGiles: P.S. Kicking pets for punishment is always abusive. Just like kicking kids is always abusive. Just stop and learn to be better.

rtcvb32: I never EVER kick pets (or kids) intentionally... (maybe when they run right in front of me unexpectedly.... but you can't help that, and it's more like just nudging them than kicking).

Glancing at my words it's easy to misread what i meant to say, in how the context was laid out. A sentence can have several different meanings depending on how you put emphasis on different words.

edit: My GF has harped on me the last half hour about how my wording has said that 'i kick cats' when clearly i do not. I guess the easiest way to fix the wording is to drop the 'without a reason' bit. So my quote post on 58 SHOULD be: I always try to give them warnings and they know it's coming; And it's not like I'm kicking them

HGiles, sorry if it seemed like i am somehow an animal abusing prick. I'm not. The only reason the cat was hiding, was because he has a good impression i will throw him right back outside, and that itself is the punishment for having caught him marking in the house multiple times.
Your GF was right. The revised wording is much better. Putting a cat out for marking is understandable. Have you thought about neutering? My pets have all been neutered. They're happier and I'm happier that way.

LOL at the unintentional kicking. It's the bane of every pet owner's life. It happens in the kitchen so often we decided that our pets were angling to make us drop food.

Our current cat is cross-eyed. He's always running into moving things. He eventually learned to start meowing after dark so we can get out of his way.

Same here... but we sometimes have guests in the garage who mark the place, which is why i guess they feel they have to mark everything and make it all smell like pee :(

Ah, wildlife. Can't live with it, can't get rid of it without hunting permits.

EDIT: I just heard 'I'm Sexy and I Know It' again, and now I want a video of cats set to that music. Arg, brain. I have other things to be thinking about.

2015 bump on behalf of all the cat lovers.
Probably all those mishaps are because poor cat is kept indoors... Mine almost never come in, always roam freely in garden or guard the front door's carpet!

They are feral. Cats. They have 98% similar DNA to large cats like lion and tiger, who are UNTAMEABLE. They be narutal predators and hunters, however affectionate they might become at moments. Indoors they are ALWAYS stressed, even if briefly kept.

Also people seem to misunderstand them for something they are not and so scold them when they do things considered naughty, like scratching this or pissmarking that, while this is perfectly normal to them. Even if you buy toys for them to do this and that, they mostly prefer items you use frequently and/or have your personal scent on, like that expensive sofa (brrr, no no NO)!

Sometimes though they become TOO affectionate. Lap cat, tail wagging, rubbing its nose constantly on yours, rubbing its cheek against your own, etc. Sometimes they impersonate the alarm clock (though, unlike others, i found it useful, once or twice really saved me from getting late at previous workplaces). Unpleasant as is, before going to sleep both cat owner owned and cat overlord, better spend some minutes petting the cutie furrball, giving it a kiss (closing eyes), a headbutt, a cheek and/or nose rub? Maybe you fell asleep before treating it like a spoiled human child? Cats need to be spoiled, its their nature, nya!

Was there an announcement about archive threads or something?

rtcvb32: I treat cats like I do dogs. If they do something bad, rub their face in it, spank them and throw them out. If they repeat it, 3 strikes and they are out.

Naturally it's far more effective if you catch them in the act. Seen one cat who sprayed a cardboard box to mark it. Spanked them, threw them out. Then threw the box out after them. The look of utter shock as they tried to comprehend you totally refuting their marking of ownership in the house as it goes out the window.

Other times when they obviously don't get it, I tell them over and over again. 'Long term repercussions!' and they know they will get thrown out if they get in. One who is like that finally started to hide behind the washer/drier to prevent me from throwing him out.

They know what's coming... even if I can't get them trained like a dog, they know what happens when they do something I don't appreciate.
You should put any pets you have up for adoption and go do some reading and educate yourself/become less ignorant on animal behavior and treatment before ever having a pet. And don't ever have children, please for the sake of humanity, society, and the planet (and I'm dead serious here.)

Yup.
I believe cats have some high charisma stat or something, in terms of CRPG lingvo. We have three cats in our household and despite all the amount of crap (mostly literal) and damage they give us we still tolerate it and love them.

My friend told me an amusing story - their farm had a fierce guard dog who wouldn't let any stranger in the territory without a bark and a bite.
Keyword HAD because one day some homeless cat showed up, moved into his doghouse, and they've literally became best friends. Somehow. He also smoothed the canine a bit and made him quieter. Any attempts at separating them made the dog turn up his "violent disobedience" meters. So he permanently became a part of that farm.
Then that cat turned the barn into a feline swinger's club.

I had "dogriders" cats.

One time I was going outside and I saw a dog running like if its life depended on it, through the door´s frozen glass, though it seemed too tall. When I rushed outside, I got to see the dog just reaching the gate on its way outside and one of my cats riding it on top and jumping off of it just before the dog crossed the gate.
I wondered how the heck did my cat do that, so another day I saw a dog coming into the garden through the front gate and I rushed outside, albeit stealthly and hide behind a wall, watching the corridor where the dog was walking through.
Atop a platform there was on the garden was my cat crouching and watching the dog. Just when the dog walked through the corridor between the wall and the higher ground my cat was on, she jumped onto the dog and punced her claws. The dog was so confused and shocked that it howled and started running to the closest exit, while my cat was riding it just before it got outside.
They were two cats, three coloured female hunters, that not only hunted mice it seemed :P
Cat Bump will tell story later this week

MY CAT AVATAR
The cats name was Thomas he was a large male tom cat with a pur that sounded like a dove. I work at an animal shelter as a volunteer
for the last 9 years now. I have been a volunteer at the Iowa City animal shelter for nine years now. Thomas was there in 07 and got adopted and was abandoned during the flood of 08 and we lost our old shelter and had moved the the county fair grounds for a couple of months till we could find a temporary home. We were supposed to get a new home in two years and it was like almost 7 years.
We have just moved into a brand new building costing 3.5 million $$$$.
Poor Thomas was on his own for almost 2 years till we found him running loose and in bad health. He had been mistreated, had no good food, exposed to the elements. Through all of this Thomas kept his love for people children in particular. With love and kindness and good medical care Thomas was able to recover but not without damage to his immune system. The vet said with good care and lots of love he could survive a few years. We let him live in the cat room at large because he was such a gentle guy in spite of hi miss treatment and neglect. He would great the people as they came into the cat room and children always got his attention.
WE FEARED because of his large size and his general healer he might not get a forever home Then one day HE met Pete a boy of about 2 that had pet savvy parents and had a dog and a rabbit. It was love at first site with Pete and Thomas and his parents said that Thomas would get the best care available.
We now come to the end of his story. Several years went by and the next time I saw Pete and his parents they had come in to get another rabbit. Pete told me that Thomas had died at 12 years of age., I know in my heart that he lived a loving carefree life with that wonderful family.
They came to the shelter to adopt a new kitten and Pete got to play with our two rabbits. I brought back all the wonderful moments we had with Thomas at the shelter. I had received a copy of a video from the family shortly after he was adopted several years ago that I think is still on youtube it is titled "Pete takes Thomas for a ride" Every time I kook at it I get a big smile.
