Every now and again one of my games will have 'New' next to it and won't tell me what it is and I don't want to reinstall a game for a possible update if that new is just 1 avatar picture added to one of the bonus zips.

It really should be easier to locate this info because in both Galaxy and on my account page I click on the affected game and nothing appears to have changed at all, leaving me to solve the mystery.

It means that the game was recently added to your library. The "new" tag won't disappear until you click on the game.

A game added to your collection on the same date it was purchased is labelled as "NEW" (see first screenshot). This label stays put until you click on the cover and open the game details.

A game that got an update is marked with a blue dot (see second screenshot), and hopefully is accompanied by an update notification in your Account tab. Both the dot and the notification will go away after you click on the cover.
An update will usually come with a changelog, which you can find in a game's drop-down menu.

Hope this helps clear up things.

It must be a bug in my account then cos every now and again a game I've owned for years will be new again and I'll hunt through it trying to figure out what has changed thinking it is an update. At least my mind is at rest, thanks guys :)

Some time before the NAS, I was hit with an odd bug where all of my games were suddenly labelled as "NEW", I hope your case does not indicate that that bug or a similar one made it over to the NAS.

You may want to submit a support ticket, and have GOG Support look into it.

Also, next time you get a random game relabelled as "NEW", you may want to try an account refresh and see if that fixes things.
