Okay I see there is an 'XP' value next to many games. I do not want to redeem spelunky or anything on the metered list. How do I buy something else witht th XP I've earned?

You don't. You get exp for purchases and if you collect enough, you get free games.

Edit: this XP value next to a game is how much XP you get for buying the game.
