I've been working on a new game called "Boot Hill Blaster". (It was originally called something different, but I decided to change the name since people thought it was associated with something else.)

Boot Hill Blaster is an arcade game where you're trapped in a cemetery and surrounded by monsters with nothing but your trusty blaster. You have to zap the monsters while avoiding their deadly touch. Watch out! Your blaster only holds three charges and you need to stand still to let it recharge.

The game was created for an NESJam in which games had to be created within the limitations of the NES: mainly resolution, palette, and sound.

A demo is available on itch.io for anyone who'd like to try it out. There are screenshots there, too. The demo contains only one enemy type, one level, and limits gameplay to scoring 20 points.

I plan on developing the game further and incorporating more enemy types, more weapons, powerups, more levels, music. etc. Once I add a couple of these things, I will release a full beta/early access version that can be purchased.

The demo version will not be developed further except for fixing any bugs that come up.

I like the idea. I will try the demo when I get a chance.
Will give it a try when I get home. I like the visuals, except the cactus, they kinda look like they're flat and made of plastic.
I noticed it's written in java. Did you use libgdx ?
Oh right, Billy Ray Cyrus Blaster or something like that.
Looks neat, the life bar seemed kind of familiar when I last saw a screenshot of it.

Thanks. Please let me know if you have any troubles running the game and feel free to comment/critique. :)

I'll see what I can do about the cactus. Thanks about the rest of the visuals.

I didn't use libgdx. The game engine was written pretty much from scratch, just Java and LWJGL.

Yeah, I decided it would be best for me to change the name. I didn't want any sort trouble down the road.

From the Steam page I see there are reviews from June and July. I hadn't heard of the game before, but "boot hill" is a common enough term and these two games are pretty different in all aspects, so I can't imagine there'd be any confusion between them.

-------------------------------------------------------------

As a note on progress for the full version of the game, I have a song written and most of the graphics done for a new enemy type.

The song has taken the most time because I had to get used to the limitations of NES sound and Famitracker. I'm happy with the one I have so far, but would like to get a couple more done.

Bumping this again to show that it's not dead.

I've posted a track for the game at: https://soundcloud.com/adam-biser/boot-hill-blaster-one-foot-in-the-grave
This will likely be the title screen song. I already have the beginnings of some game play music.

It may be a common term, but it's not common at all to be used as a video game title. When I first saw the thread I thought it was about Boot Hill Heroes lol. There's definitely the potential for confusion.

There was also an old arcade game called simply "Boot Hill". I'm sure there are others.

Yeah those are the only 2 games I could find when searching gamefaqs.. I don't think it's a common game title.

It was also a TSR RPG (table top) game.

Nonetheless, I don't see enough similarities between the two games to feel a need to change the name of mine.

I'm pretty sure your confusion quickly evaporated once you opened the thread.

It did ;)

Boot Hill Blaster is a cool name, and I'm not saying you should change it.. just that there might be a bit of confusion at first glance.

Thanks. At a glance, yes.

It was created for a game jam, but I want to develop it a bit further. I don't like to leave things half-finished. The full version will be at most $2 and I'm going to add some more things before releasing it. So this is "early access with a demo"... I thought I might try out that way of development and outreach and see how it feels.
Another couple of songs:
