UPDATE: We've temporarily disabled the 3-D Secure authentication protocol as the implementation of new regulations has been delayed in some countries and not all banks yet support it. This way you shouldn't experience any inconveniences during debit and credit card payments.

We'd like to inform you that since today all card payments made in the GOG.COM store will be subject to a new 3-D Secure authentication protocol.

3-D Secure authentication requires additional confirmation of the transaction via your Bank's website or mobile app to prevent fraud in online credit and debit card payments. Thanks to this additional security measure, your personal data and money will be even safer than before.

In case of issues with completing your purchases with cards, please contact our Support team.
After initial card confirmation (CVV/CVC, etc), there will be an extra step, which will depend solely on how your bank confirms such transactions.

It can be a bank page with a code confirmation, which will be sent to your mobile phone, or banking app confirmation. Some banks provide password cards for example.

fronzelneekburm: One question:

Was this system implemented because of recent EU regulations?
Yes, it is due to new EU regulations regarding online payments (Strong Customer Authentication) coming in effect on 14 of September.

Zoidberg: Doesn't change anything for paypal, right?
The change is being made for debit and credit cards to abide with latest EU legislation. Authentication process depends from your Bank.

It doesn't affect the way other payment methods, like PayPal or Paysafecard, works.

fronzelneekburm: A little follow-up question: Does gog use a third party to provide this 3D Secure (which acts as an intermediary between gog and the banks, if I understand the way this works correctly)?
Yes, debit and credit card payments are handled by a third-party payment provider. 3-D Secure is part of the payment process between this provider and your Bank.

tinyE: That's fine, but I live in a dead zone. I don't have a mobile phone, and even if I did, it wouldn't work,

I suppose I could sell the B&B and move. :D
It's up to your bank to decide if they'll send you a verification code via sms, or via a pigeon :D

You should contact your bank for more details.

Maxvorstadt: Thing is, Paysafecard is only a code, like the cards you use to load money on your prepaid phone. So it is simply not possible to authenticitate/verify your Paysafecard, other then typing in the code on it.
This new authentication protocol is for debit and credit cards issued by Banks only.

Paysafecard is neither - it's a different payment method with its own flow.

Lexor: What about prepaid Visa cards issued by bank?
I suggest you check that with the bank that issues such cards. New authentication protocols vary depending on the banks, not storefronts.

NascarDeb: I received a text from my credit card company asking me to verify I made a purchase yesterday, I verified yes. Items are still sitting in my cart. How long will it take to process?
As far as I can tell, all your recent transactions were declined by your bank after the 3DS check. Perhaps the bank will now let you make another payment, now that they have verified your intention to do so?
The original payment attempts cannot be re-processed though, so the only way to go forward would be to try again.
If it doesn't work, I would suggest contacting your bank in order to check what the underlying issue was, or using a different payment method altogether.

If you wish to investigate further, please open a support ticket - it will be easier than via the forums.

Also, I initially misunderstood the payment statuses and processed your order manually. Once I realized my mistake, I canceled the order. Sorry about the confusion. :(

Lexor: What about prepaid Visa cards issued by bank?
It's worth checking if there are any regional restrictions imposed on the prepaid cards.
From experience, I know this is often a problem for customers hailing from the USA - oftentimes their prepaid cards can only be used in the USA and Canada.
Might not be the case for EU countries making transactions from other EU countries, but worth checking, just in case.

GilesHabibula: So, tldr, you probably just need to go through the purchase process again, but this time it will go right through, since the seller and the purchase amount have now been pre-approved by you.
Dang, 2nd. :(
Thanks, though. :)

I updated the newspost with details on why we temporarily disabled this feature.
