Both games are awesome, but I preferred the original. 2 felt a bit heavy on the city building side of things

I honestly don't understand what anyone found appealing about B&W 2, it was an absolute train wreck. There was no strategy, no building, it was such a horrendously unfinished game. I was gutted, I disliked B&W1 when I bought it, then found out the hidden depths. Then I found out those depths were removed from B&W2.
What is it that people miss about this game? The lack of control? The stupid building system? The ridiculously small sphere of influence? It was terrible. Please do let me know what I've missed, I really wanted to like it.
