lmao what kind of system administrator are you if you panic so much over false positive junk , if you had the balls you would have downloaded the file with your anti virus off and confirm back to the community that it was not a threat , instead you are hiding behind like a coward.

Old dos exe tend to get picked up by extremely sensitive antivirus scanners , you can download some of gamer exe happy software such as microsoft security essentials or malwarebytes and see if its legit

avast and avg are one of the worst antiviruses that picks up games files frequently as false positives , steam even has support articles saying avg will mess up with steam working unless you exclude it

In times of Rogues and Malware, classic antivirus are totally obsolete. I still have one installed, just as a "tradition", the only thing that really cares about my computer is Hitman Pro or Malware bytes among other "cleaners" that I use from time to time. I also have used AVAST and AVG, but seriously, is more a tradition... they basically do NOTHING nowadays.

rtcvb32: Makes me wonder about the approach to learning and the mindset of the users.

Today most people don't know basic knots, everything's been replaced with premade cable kits that have no knots involved, and if it breaks you buy a new one.

Today most people are programmed to accept stuff blindly... EULA's, NDA's, renting agreements, bank account agreements, mortgage and other agreements... people blindly will sign away their lives without taking the time to actually read what they are agreeing to...

I could post a comment about how nobody outside of the US and Canada gives a crap about it but instead - here's a pic of my beloved niece.
AVG
Avast
Avira
NANO-Antivirus
I wouldn't install these on my PC .

Potzato: It would need a confirmation but I think that beer in bottle is cheaper than water in bottle over there. At least that's what I was told growing up, and led me to believe this is some kind of eldorado.
No, generally bottled water is cheaper than bottled beer (but it depends on the brands of both products), but in a restaurant/pub beer is usually cheaper than non-alcoholic beverages. Altough they are trying to pass a law that would force restaurants to offer at least one non-alcoholic drink cheaper than alcoholic drinks (to combat teenage/child drunkedness).
Seriously OP, stop being an asshole.
You say that you didn't wanted to spread panic or hurt GOG's reputation but that's exactly what this thread is about. You think that your word is the one that counts because your antivirus picked ESSENTIALS files to run the game as malware.
And you disregard a statement from from a GOG representative because "isn't enough evidence" and you want confirmation from the antivirus company saying that's those files are ok...just what?
Again, get the fuck off your high horse and get what this through your thick skull,it's a fucking false-positive.
Screw it,I'm done with this thread...TinyE let's derail this shit.

Seriously, stop being so ignorant. Do you think insulting people will make your argument stronger? No, you lack evidence, and you are acting on belief alone, that's why you need these verbal crutches. People like you are the reason why there is over million of zombies on the net. If you let your infected computer spew malware and mount attacks on servers as a part of a botnet, it's others who have to deal with the consequences of your stupidity. Statistically, there is a good chance some of the users who provided such a "good advice" in this thread are running infected computers themselves.

But I have a proposition to those who would like to learn something about the computer they use every day. Install a network analysis software like Wireshark, and find out what outgoing connections your computer makes - to what IP addresses and what ports. Does it connect to IRC channels somewhere in China? Or to some shady Korean IP to a high port without an apparent reason? And if so, why is that? Do you have at least a faintest idea about what your computer, that is your property and that you are legally responsible for, is actually doing while you play your games?

then stop being a git about it all. ive read the whole thread and all I have seen is you contradicting your OP and pushing a non-existent point.
go contact the antivirus authority or whatever it was that was better than word direct fro the gog staff on the matter and quit pissing about on here if we're all such a bunch of low-brow hosers, otherwise you will continue to have people post as they have - or are you ignorant of your own part in this thread somehow and the ignorance with which you have approached the entire situation. if all you need is for someone to agree with you, there are politicians around the world followed abut by a variety of "yes men" and equally as ignorant of the fact presented to them, I suggest you go and find one and pal up because right now you are alienating yourself from everybody on here through an entirely similar manner of being.

in short: please bum-off. TA!

Fortunately, you are in no position to order me around just because you and your flock of believers are annoyed that I refuse to share the blind faith that "the file is okay, because Jimmy says it's okay". So please, stop it.

We are not saying that the file is okay because Jimmy (or Trevor, as the case may be) said it;s OK. We are saying that the file is OK due to what virustotal reports.

52 out of 56 AV claim the file is fine. Out of the 4 that claim it's not, no two agree on what the infection is (granted, you may accept Avast's and Avira's detection as it being the same). All 4 claim it's a 32bit malware on a 16bit executable. Two of them say it's a generic malware, while the other two claim it's a malware, while the other two claim it's a virus that contains a specific string in the file (is the string there btw?).

So, it's similar to a wireshark report that even though it looks weird, it is actually legit.

P.S. Since I don't have the game currently installed, do you have the virustotal reports for the 4 files themselves? Or only for the setup?

I have Avast report for the specific files inside the archive. Does not matter, I am sending the files to the AV companies with request for comment, and I will publish the results.

What I am frankly disappointed and disgusted about is the number of personal attack I have been subject to in these forums just because I have pointed out there is a potential security issue with the installation.

Kamamura: just because I have pointed out there is a potential security issue with the installation.
It's not because you pointed that out, it's the way you did.

Let's say a user in your company gets a "This site is blocked due to potential malware infection" on a site your company uses, and he comes to you claiming you have to purge the whole network due to possible infection. Would you thank him for his concern, or tell him he has nothing to worry about?
And how would you react when he kept saying that everything has to be scrubbed clean and thoroughly checked before anything other work from the company can be done, even though you've already told him he has nothing to worry about?

This is the most concerning thing I have read in this thread.

Good luck with your little crusade. Can't wait to see you post the results :)
