A vote for X3: Terran Conflict until someone makes a modern star wars single player game where you can command a Star Destroyer.

& sorry, rebirth suck.

No it really does.

Starpoint Gemini Warlords looks interesting but I haven't played it yet.
Does homeworld count as a sim? Not sure there... I haven't taken the time to sit down & play the tutorial.
No one hardly ever mentions Star Crusader, which was a pretty good game if you ask me.

As for joysticks, I keep recommending the T.16000M and if you are planning to play Elite: Dangerous or Star Citizen you might want to consider getting two of them.

I like Starpoint Gemini 2 a lot, well the universe is not that big, but there are lots of factions, story lines, roles you can play. You have no cockpit view, you see your ship from a 3rd person perspective.

And I played Eilte a lot back then, I still remember getting drawn out of warp by Thargoids fighting for like 1 hour against the force and then, having destroyed all their ships hanging in the middle of nowhere with not enough fuel to get to any planet. I took hours and hours to fly to a sun to fuel my ship back up.

And then there is Eve Online and if you consider NMS a feat, well have a look at that:

DaCostaBR: Last week I made a discussion on modern Space Sims, it felt like people were dying to talk about their old favorites instead, so I thought it'd make for good conversation to hear everyone share their opinions.

The one I probably played the most is definitely the Wing Commander series, very combat focused, it always gave me that feeling of Top Gun in space and being an ace pilot.

I never played Privateer. I hear you get to haul cargo in that, so I assume it's a more open sort of game. Unfortunately I lost a cable from my flight stick, is it necessary to play Privateer? How good is it regardless?

I actually do own the game, so I could just find out for myself, but why waste a perfectly good conversation topic.
I won't repeat what's already been said but for newer games, you should try Evochron: Legacy. It's very very good. It's a simulation, however so expect having a hard time at first as always with that kind of game. It looks pretty good (not up to AAA standards but good enough once you mod some files) and the newtonian physics is great. Seamless planet landing included ^^

Tie Fighter
X-Wing

Maxvorstadt: If you like to steer your ship with mouse and keyboard, play Dark Star One, it has basically the controls of a FPS, and that`s great!
Same with e.g. Descent 3. I first played it with a flightstick and it felt great with it, but the game was so hard that you really needed the snappy controls of mouseaim to survive and have any chance at all to hit the enemies which constantly zip by and actively dodge your shots.

But as with Privateer, then it didn't really feel like flying a ship anymore. It felt more like controlling a floating Doom/Quake space marine. Oh well, can't have it all I guess.
and [url=https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/starlancer]Starlancer were fun space sim games! If only GOG could get Microsoft to sign up...

amrit9037: I also liked Universe Sandbox but for physics simulation.
Now that's literally a space sim :D

I just read that there's a sequel and apparently it's much better, although it's still early access on Steam: Universe Sandbox ²
Starlancer is the only space sim I actually enjoyed... Though I never had a joystick so... xD
