PC gamer made an interesting list:

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-best-fps-levels-ever/

My suggestion: Metroid Prime, Level: Everything.
My favorite: Tricks and Traps, Doom ][.
The Metroid Prime series have very interesting game level design. I must say the best times I had when playing Metroid Prime games was outside of combat and scanning the area, watching the difference between all the ancient alien races' lost civilizations. Fun fact, I still haven't beaten the finale boss in Metroid Prime 3. I manage to get him down to his last phase with half his health and then I start to lose health fast and eventually die.

I really enjoyed the levels in Deus Ex, Thief, Dishonored and Bioshock. That sniper mission in Call of Duty 4; best atmosphere in a shooter mission period.
Gloom Keep was a great level to the original Quake! I would also add "The Black Cathedral" from the Quake expansion "Scourge of Armagon." If you've ever played Quake 1, you have to play the mission packs!
That's actually a really good list. Well, from a purely single player standpoint at least. They could have done with making that distinction in the title because my first thought when seeing this thread was Q2DM1.

I would include that carnival level from Blood. Maybe the Nazi level from Metro 2033. You categorically got to have something from the Stalker games in there and there are definitely levels from Wolfenstien NWO that wouldn't look out of place on that list either. But yeah, on the whole that's a good list.

Funny that HL2's Ravenholm is in second place. OK, maybe the level was well designed, but I recall it was where I finally had enough of HL2.

Also, no Bluff Eversmoking from Unreal?

So many to choose from:

favorite doom2 level, industrial
This damned creepy part of the zone
Original Delta force night time ambush
That part in Quake 4 where you are assaulting the Strogg facilities with Lieutenant Voss
thief 2 demo level
and perhaps my all-time favorite, from possibly my all time favorite FPS:
too awesome to handle

What is the name of the level in Dark Forces 2 where you have to run across a ship dodging TIE fighter attacks?

That needs to be here. :D

Oh and Akron Ohio from NOLF 2.

The Citadel from Half-Life 2
Does hybrids like Jedi Knight Series count?

Gnostic: Does hybrids like Jedi Knight Series count?
I was going to ask about those. I mentioned DF 2 which is a true FPS but I wanted to mention the 'Tram' level from Jedi Academy which may not count.
My pick would be pretty much any level from Dishonored. Magnificent art design!

Then, Half-Life 1 & 2; i liked most of the levels in these games but Surface Tension (HL) was a big & awesome level where many things happened and Nova Prospekt & Ravenholm (HL2) were full of atmosphere.

Metro 2033 that i finished a couple weeks ago, had an awesome level where there was an orthodox church (if i remember correctly it was at Polis); surely i was amazed when i first saw it. Also, in Dead City level, the vision of this was a great moment... Great game with nice exploration qualities..

It is mentioned above, though i'll give a vote to the Chernobyl level in COD4; this and the opening level were the best that this game offered for me. The same for COD World at War and the Vietnam level. (can't remember anything else from that game as i played it only once but the scripted scene with the trapped fighter plane was great!)
Basically all my favorite levels are either from NOLF or from Deus Ex. Hard to choose. Maybe NOLF's sinking ship. Deus Ex's harbour and underwater base. As some overly attentive forumers may have long noticed, I kinda have a thing for water.

Also loved Outlaws' western town, and Far Cry's level with the huge rope bridge far above water. Both for the sense of freedom they offer.

I would love to mention some AvP Marine level, deliciously tense, but I tend to merge them all in my memory. Hard to say which one was the most memorable. Possibly the one in the Colony (the second level?), that had you run up and down and in and out, chasing for manual switches and stuff.

I liked it, especially how you could use the saw blades as projectiles, and there were others too like that spinning blade, into which you tried to lure zombies.

A couple I would probably add myself:

- Near the end of Serious Sam: First Encounter, outside the pyramid. It was nothing special from level design point of view (in fact, it was very simple), but just something about seeing enemies coming at you miles away, and then that towering big baddie following you all the time. It was breathtaking.

- Some Far Cry outdoors level, maybe the one with the hang-glider.

I guess I simply have a soft spot for free roaming big levels in FPS.

+ for the outdoor levels of Far Cry. There is more than one level with a hang glider, at least (mission 4) and Rebellion (mission 11, screenshots are wrong). Rebellion is awesome.
