I think I saw that movie.

Ricky_Bobby: Maybe I'm too much of a grunt, but Ghost in The Shell to me is composed of four things:

1) a dystopian cyberpunk future
2) a hot badass babe in a skin-suit
3) cool robot-y stuff
4) corporate political corruption

tinyE: That pretty much is what composes everything I look for a in a movie period. :D

Well, "Tron Legacy" had all those and that sucked.
But this also has Takeshi Kitano.

jamyskis: The "whitewashing" argument should have been put to rest alone from the fact that Mamoru Oshii gave his blessing to ScarJo's casting (
Well technically Mamoru Oshii only did the two first movies (the original GitS and Innocence), he is not the creator of the original characters, manga (that would be Masamune Shirow) nor has he anything to do with the anime series (neither SaC nor Arise) or the third animated "film".

That said given Shirow usual female character design I doubt he has anything against a Caucasian woman playing one of his characters as long as she is sexy and athletic :-) .

UnrealQuakie: Attack on titan got made into a live action and some Japanese themselves wanted the states to pull it off cause the CG done was crap from some movie enthusiasts and fans of the franchise.

Asian viewers do complain but do it in a very keep to self or a more neutral way. But I am having some high hope for this to be Decent at least. Crosses fingers.
The big problem with Attack on Titan is that race is a central plot point for the series. There is a reason everyone is white and there is just a single asian. Admittedly just how important wasn't revealed until after the movie was done but it does ruin it.

Otherwise in most anime race is pretty interchangeable. As long as race isn't central to the plot the race of the actors shouldn't matter. On the other hand replacing all the actors of Django Unchained with Japanese actors wouldn't make any sense.

Ricky_Bobby: The alternative is what, a Chinese (-American) actress famous in the West ? Michelle Yeoh, Ming-Na, Lucy Liu, Zhang Ziyi ?
Somehow I don't think picking a Chinese actress would sit better with the Japanese, I still remember the Geisha controversy.
No, the alternative is to cast an american actress of japanese descent.

Then you say "how many well-known american actresses of japanese descent are there?" and that's exactly the point. If a part originally meant for a certain ethnicity is recast with a white actor because there are no famous actors of that ethnicity, then how will there ever be famous actors of that ethnicity if all the parts they'd be eligible for always go to white actors instead?

Whitewashing is a vicious cycle. They could've broken it, but they didn't.

Ricky_Bobby: Do these people have an inferiority complex or something ?
Stand alone complex. An organic meme, if you will.
I doubt any Japanese give a f*** about this. It's just another manifestation of demented US identity politics.
What we really need though is a proper GitS themed game. Something like a mix between the open world Batman games and Oni.
Indeed, this is very serious.

Ricky_Bobby: Wow, being a Westerner is such http://kotaku.com/twitter-users-troll-the-ghost-in-the-shell-hollywood-mo-1793287657] a crime[/url] in this Western re-make of a Japanese anime.
Since places like kotakunts existed.

Gersen: On the third side (yeah I know) it is Hollywood adapting an Anime, by definition I would expect it to be awful regardless of the actors nationality and as a rule I don't want Hollywood anywhere close any Anime, game, etc... I care about.
I agree. Making a live action movie of Ghost in the Shell is just a bad idea, especially when it's made in Hollywood.

Does anyone remember that supershitty Dragonball movie? :D

Impaler26: Does anyone remember that supershitty Dragonball movie? :D
I actually liked few minutes of it.

As an Asian I don't give a damn about movie cast unless movie is not crap.

Ricky_Bobby: I just think the whole reaction is really odd. It's not supposed to be about race, yet that seems to be all they care about.
This is why more people are becoming conservative. Liberal politics and attitudes tend to be completely discriminatory and irrational. "Why didn't any black people win the Oscars? Racists!" "Ok, lets make sure black people win the next one then, and include a black winner in every reward just to please them." This is what happens when things like affirmative action and tantrums get normalized.

Not that Scarlet is a great actress anyway or that the movie wouldn't suck based on the story alone. I'm just sayin' that politics affect the politically correct Hollywood (and vice versa), which is the root of all of this crap. Once you understand that then it all becomes clearer. ^^
