I was discussing with a friend last night a number of games to "spice up" our multi-player shenanigans, as our loose-knit long time gaming circle seemed to gravitate toward a number of specific game titles over the years and in most cases latch on to a single game or two and never let go. I myself like playing some good ole standbys too, but over time playing the same games with the same people endlessly can start to get less exciting and sometimes down right boring.

So, I went through my game lists mentioning various old and new games that I think would be fun to incorporate into our occasional multi-player sessions either one-on-one, one-with-one, or group play. One of the games I suggested was "Battle Realms", because I stumbled upon that game by accident years ago having it bundled along with a different game that I actually was buying (Planet of the Apes). It sat there for a year or more before I even installed Battle Realms to try it out, but when I did I was pleasantly surprised to find a quite fun RTS game that had a fun multi-player mode and for a while we all ended up playing it and enjoying it, then it just kind of vanished from our list...

So my buddy tells me that they're working on a new sequel for the game finally - "Battle Realms 2: Lair of the Lotus" and funding it on Kickstarter. I searched Kickstarter and all I could find was "Battle Realms Legends", a card based RPG game that had a failed kickstarter a while back. No mention of Battle Realms 2 anywhere. Googling around I found a scant number of articles about this "upcoming sequel" but none of it sounded like a line of code has been written yet. Here's an article discussing it that mentions they'd be doing a kickstarter:

There doesn't appear to be any newer information out there, and the company's own website throws up a 404 error on the home page with an ugly web error below it that seems to indicate that either their website has been hacked or experiencing some technical problems and they haven't noticed yet nor fixed it. Either way it seems like they may be out to lunch.

At any rate it seems like "Battle Realms 2, coming soon..." is a bit of a far stretch considering that was announced over 2 years ago and there is scant information about it out there at all that I've been able to dig up. For all intents and purposes it seems like they spoke too soon and the whole idea of a sequel is just some major wishful thinking.

Has anyone else heard anything about this game or any fund raising for it, or have any useful links that don't end up on a website generating a 404 error? Both Kickstarter and Indiegogo pull up dry at least.

It'd be nice to see Battle Realms spark a modern sequel as it was a pretty good game when it came out even though it wasn't that well known at the time. It is often compared to Warcraft 3 often with people calling it a Warcraft 3 ripoff even though it came out a good year or more before Warcraft 3 was ever released.

If it's still in the works, it'd be nice to track their progress though, and hopefully it comes to GOG. Looks like the original game is currently trying to go through Steam Greenlight too which seems odd.
My understanding is that Lair of the Lotus was cancelled in favor of releasing an updated version of the original that would be integrated with Steam (in particular the matchmaking multiplayer). I was hoping they would do a similar treatment for GoG Galaxy but I'm not terribly hopeful.

[EDIT] Also Lair of the Lotus would be an expansion to the original game and not a true sequel.

"When we started this project, the most common feedback that I would get is… 'Why not Battle Realms 2?' I would then take the time to explain [...] that I felt that Battle Realms 2 would require 5 million USD to do properly. Having seen only the tiniest fraction of projects fund to that amount on Kickstarter, I explained that I didn’t think the amount could be raised through crowd funding. [...] So, short of something very unexpected, when and if Lair of the Lotus happens, it will be an expansion to Battle Realms rather than a sequel."

Oh? Updated in which way? Because i would pay for a HD (widescreen) version.
I thought they abandoned the updated version of the original?

Last announcement was that they were in final testing on December 10th, 2015. Not too long ago.

[EDIT] Thet were hoping to release in January. Obviously that didn't happen so we'll see...

They're probably spending a lot of time now not maintaining their webserver. :)

This is from their site:

Good old Games has been a wonderful friend and companion over the years. The original game is available on their site now and soon we will have support for their matchmaking service and more.

This sounds like great news. I just spoke to a few people tonight and have number interested in doing BR multiplayer now, which was aimed at LAN, but some online action would be nice too.
Awesome news, now they just need to release a new patch for Battle Realms 1 that allows widescreen resolutions.

That's awesome. Hopefully it will happen soon.
So Battle Realms Legends isnt going to be a strategy game, but a card game with RPG elements ?

Nevermind: They couldnt gather enough money on kickstarter for the game.

Yeah, that'd be cool along with support for 2560x1600 resolution or higher *with* HUD and mouse pointer scaling. :)

I just found this community patch:
