You can save anywhere if you really want.

But you must try, try and try, try and try.

There is no try. Only Save States.
Guys, please consider not shitposting for low-rep members (those who probably don't visit often) without first posting actual advice, even just "contact Support". It's kinda like kicking a person when they're down, imo.

My suggestions: ask on the game forum - https://www.gog.com/forum/the_bards_tale#1504553970 - and snoop around there. If that doesn't help, contact GOG Support and see if they can help you. Please try to be clearer what your problem is though, use the best English you can.

Here's the situation on saving anywhere in the series, assuming no emulator save states:

BT1: You can only save at the inn (unless you are playing the beta of the remaster)
BT2: Some versions allow you to save anywhere (except in a Death Snare). The DOS and Apple ][gs versions have this feature; the Apple ][ and Commodore 64 versions do not.
BT3: All versions have this feature (though I recommend that you avoid the DOS and Amiga versions; too many bugs)

Note that, when the save anywhere feature is present, there may be two versions of the same character saved: One in the inn, and one in the current save. It is actually possible to exploit this to duplicate characters and items; the exact procedure is left as an exercise for the reader.

I think that user is talking about emulator save states. However, you could also look at my post for which Bard's Tale games offer that feature without needing an emulator (of course, if you don't want to use an emulator, you will need to locate the actual hardware for the version you want to play).

As I hinted above, use an emulator with Save States function.
