Looks like I might have to reformat my PC and reinstall Windows. I can make backups of my saves of CD and GOG games easily, but how do I do that for my Steam games? Do you do it normally like for other games, or do you have to somehow do it from the client? All are recent games, if it makes any difference.

You can do backups via the client, but there's no common folder where the saved games are stored, so you may not/likely will not capture all your saved games if you do it that way (not even sure if it backs up any saves this way, tbh). Best way is to find the save folder for each particular game and back those up.
What Groot said +

You may have to show hidden folders/files in order to see folders like appdata where save games may be
So basically treat them like GOG/normal games? Find the saved files on disc and make a copy?

Yes and remember to paste them in the same location obviously

edit: I see mention of SteamCloud but many folks complaining about it. Is that an option?

Yeah, but it's like 8 or 10 games only. Shouldn't be a problem.

This made me chuckle :)

(Sorry I just imagined someone backing up his saves and getting angry that they didn't reapper after a reinstall because he forgot to copy them back).
