well that's an interesting insight. I would consider myself "old" in gaming ages as well as i played my first games in 1992.

And ya i really have troubles getting into newer games sometimes despite i'm actually interested into them and they are actually decent enough games.

What games come into mind being recent decent games i totally didn't get into right now are Shadows of Mordor and and the Batman Arkham Series (starting with Asylum) - i like both franchises/universes and i guess i also like the general gameplay/fighting system and both seemed interesting in the beginning. Played both for a starting play of like 3-4 hours and somehow never came back as i totally didn't "connect" to the game - in the case of Batman i even started a Playthrough of the Longest Journey on the same day instead of trying it some more - with Mordor i just didn't have time anymore on that day and the next few and then didn't bother playing again.

A newer game which i totally hated and which was huge waste of 60€ was Dragon Age Inquisition - i liked DAO before and well DA2 i somehow endured and hoped for something good but well except for like 4-6 good hours in the main-story, one good sidequest and 2 good companion quests this game felt so bland and utterly soulless and empty and i totally didn't get into it and playing it through (ya i played it through as i paid fullprice 60€ for it and hoped it would improve sometimes -.- ) felt like just a chore. And no idea what they thought about that MMO inspired search and collect stuff - these bad quests and also a blinking things on my map every 2metres felt just wrong and ya i really thought i'm too old for this shit ^^ .

One thing i also totally not getting are "Achievements" - no idea why people actually need them or why developers sometime (feeling like that -.-) spend more time on developing "awesome Achievements" instead of programming their game -.- .

Regardings OPs problem with MGS - it took my a bit of time to get into the game as after the intro sequence the game gets really really slow regarding story telling and well there is also the blatant location recycling which really feels awkward/bad but now i really found a liking to it and i'm about 60% through. Regarding the repeating locations well i somehow "fixed" bad game design by myself so i really watch out that i do certain sideops at certain times and by this not to have to "attack" the same airport thrice in 1 hour - or having to rescue some random Prisoner from a location which was wiped by The Skulls 5 minutes ago and suddenly everything looks nice and normal again....
