Just what the title says.

I'm pretty new to GOG, just bought my first game today. I want to gift a copy of the game to my mother. I can't just pay for it with a card (I didn't know that before) until I buy at least $10 worth of stuff and then wait at least three months. My question is, if I put some money into my wallet, can I purchase the game for her that way? I don't want to add any funds until and unless I know that I can use them for the game.

I understand security stuff, but, boy, is this frustrating.

Thanks in advance for any help.

GOG Wallet or its funds cannot be gifted, sold, transferred or otherwise disposed of, but you can use your GOG Wallet to purchase gift copies of GOG games for other GOG users.

I'm 100% sure that you can -- generally speaking -- use wallet funds to buy gifts. Because I did exactly that 2 days ago.

HOWEVER, I cannot tell if wallet funds help you circumvent limitations for new users.
Using an unverified credit card to top up your GoG wallet is pretty much the same thing, isn't it?

Which game you got in mind? I might have a spare key laying around; though few of them are mom/grandma worthy.

Less security, and more deal with stolen credit cards and G2A issues. But it's about the same.

If you add funds via a credit card, i'm sure it's under the same rules.

HOWEVER, i'm sure added via paypal or one of the other payment methods may not be.

The Catacombs Pack (https://www.gog.com/game/catacombs_pack).

We had one of the games forever ago. The devs released in as shareware back in the '90s and it was a family fav. I'd love to give her a copy of the whole thing.

I highly doubt you've got a code, but if you do and are willing to share, you'd be a real prince amongst men. LOL.

Precisely. I'd be surprised if topping up your wallet lets you circumvent the new user gifting restrictions. If you can, then it's likely a lack of foresight by GOG (or another goof by the devs) rather than a genuine allowance.

Yeah that isn't in my games or gift codes. EGA graphics, hmmm...

Though if you're willing to put a little elbow grease in, i could probably link you to download a shareware iso when they were slapping like 300 games on a CD usually demos, shareware, and the occasional 'addon' like a plane for flight simulator. Beyond a little DoxBox know-how it would be free, though i am not sure it would actually contain catacombs games.

edit: Found what looks like the shareware version of the game at ClassicDosGames.com, which comments that the original game was sold for $2, but the complete series is $6 here on GoG.

Personally I'd probably get the shareware, get Dosbox happy with it (not much work on that, extract mount and run the exe file) and share that with your mom, or share the 'play online that runs an emulator dosbox via JS, and when your 3 months are up if you're still wanting to get the game, then purchase the gift code. Everyone wins, right?
