Just wondering, I've been flipping back and fourth on my account from Rayman to Superfrog. Really feeling unsatisfied with my avatar, I was thinking about using a cartoon character I like. Are there any rules or limitations on what can and can't be used as an avatar?

I don't use the forums much, though I will peek in from time to time, or post in game-specific forums.

To tell the true, I have no idea. But if it's the same as in other sites, I guess you shouldn' have any trouble if it isn't crude, sexually graphic, racist, gory or nazi. Just use common sense ;)
American psycho avatars are my domain.
Other than it has to be clean... i can't think of any off the top of my head...

Supposedly there's a copyright issue about posting something you don't own or didn't take yourself, but meta data of who owns it usually gets mangled or destroyed...

Although 99% of the time it's hardly an advertisement or something like that. Hmm...

Glancing at the settings to change my avatar, i'm not seeing a set of rules. Some places like FA will say you need to have it up to 100x100 and 50k, of one of a particular set of formats, and if you break those rules it will convert it to jpeg to the proper dimensions, although that would ruin animated gifs (although those are broken here currently)

Yeah, that's actually is a bit of my concern too. I wouldn't use anything crude, sexual, racist or gory (it's not in my personality really... ironically I play stuff like Mortal Kombat, Shadow Warrior, and Duke 3D) as Azreal said to avoid.

Not to mention on another service and site I use, they do mention copyright.

Hmm, I do have a plushie of the character, maybe I can make a creative photo of it doing something and use that.

What's clean? I've seen one that had partial nudity.
Thanks for your help guys. Maybe I'll sleep over it thinking about what I might want to do for an avatar. Maybe I'll get a bit creative or something.

GOG converts avatars to .jpg. It's better if you do that yourself before uploading unless you like blurring. Largest size seems to be 250x250px (for galaxy or something?). If it's smaller or larger GOG just scales it up or down. 49x49px is what the forum currently uses, but it's 80x80px when you go to edit your account.

That's actually a good question. The US is too anal about what is acceptable for public or not. Quite a few Japaneese mangas and animes will have nude scenes, but the anime itself itsn't inherently anything naughty or bad, and yet it's over-sensitive and censored everywhere in the US...

So... I'll give my own definition of clean.

1) No primarily sexual content. This includes close-up shots of genitals, graphic acts of sex. However ones that are more for humor and cartoonish ones might be okay, i can think of at least one or two good examples of this.

2) Non-visceral. Keep inside parts inside and unseen. I actually have a weak stomach to that kind of thing, although Fallout's exploding heads is kinda funny (although a little unnerving). The exception to this would be blood as the only thing shown. I have an avatar that uses this alone.

3) No advertisements. We really don't need avatars saying 'drink the dew!' or something stupid like that.

4) No controversy. We don't need something that causes conflict by means of race, religion, or some sensitive button pressing.

5) Try to keep it SFW. This is mostly so someone doesn't get fired because they frequented GoG forums; Kinda makes me wish we could upload more than one avatar and mark them appropriately... But that might get confusing.

Hmmm.... off hand that's all i can think of... i can't really add in no cigarettes or drugs as unless you're advertising a brand or something it's probably more the character (duke nukem for example) than anything else.
Don't drop Vangers while using an avatar, or you'll end up like mine.

This is what I was pretty much thinking of when I saw the word clean. After some thinking about it, I think I'll stick with ones included with GOG games as a safe precaution then. Besides browsing the avatars included with Rayman 2, there's quite a few choices, so I'll try one of those for now.

By the way, my avatar I had in mind was either Tails from Sonic or Fluttershy from My Little Pony, I doubt those two things fall under any of that. My concern stems from another gaming service I use for one classic RTS collection (*cough*Origin*cough*) where they say do not use pictures you don't own the rights to. Obviously I'm not Sega or Hasbro respectively. :P
