I recently got the tank sim Steel Fury Kharkov 1942, and while it will boot and run...

... the game will only display the lowest graphics settings (game only recognizes my intel graphics card and not my Nvidia)...

... and...

... no matter what screen size / resolution I pick, instruction dialogue is partially off-screen and the UI boxes are jumbled and unusable.

I've looked around and some claim its fixable and others claim it's not. Some say changing the config files will work while others cite an incompatibility with Nvidia.

Has anyone here had a history with this game and / or overcome this same issue?

Quite a coincidence, as I happened to install this game last week, but this was on Windows 7/64bit.
(I originally got the game as part of the SFI Super Bundle that Strategy First sold many years ago, and last week I decided to try that all those game installers are still fine, by installing the games, including this tank sim.)

Anyways, in Windows 7 (with NVidia Geforce GTX 670M) it seems to run, at least on 1024x768 resolution and all the graphics options enabled. This Windows 7 laptop has only the Geforce GPU, no Intel HD.

My Windows 10 laptop has Intel HD and Geforce Quadro P600, so if I remember, I'll test it out there. In the meantime, have you tried e.g. dgVoodoo2 with the game? That can potentionally fix many graphics problems in older games in Windows 10.

Many thanks! I haven't looked at dgVoodoo2 (although I did run across people talking about it). Will give a look!

Thank you so much for the aid. Very much appreciate it!
I tried it quickly on Windows 10, and I seem to have similar issues as you. The laptop has Intel UHD Graphics 630 and NVidia Quadro P600 GPUs. In the NVidia control panel I've told it to prefer the higher performance (NVidia) GPU, but I am not sure which one it used with the game (how can you tell which GPU is used in your case?).

To me it appears as if the game screen is for some reason zoomed in, showing only part of the screen. This happens already in the start menu. The game loading screen first shows the whole screen, but after awhile it zooms in too. It is hard for me to navigate in the menus as I see only part of the menu screen. Oddly though, the menu screen shows fine if I press Esc during the gameplay, but I can't change any graphics settings from there. I have to exit to the main menu, and there this zoom-in problem happens again.

I am not sure but it might be that even the intro videos in the game are similarly "zoomed in".

So yeah, during the game I also see only part of the tutorial text, as part of the game screen is not showing but is out of bounds.

I tried to use dgVoodoo2 with the game but it didn't seem to affect this behavior at all, and I am not even sure dgVoodoo2 activated itself with the game (there is normally the optional "dgVoodoo2" watermark at the right bottom part of the screen indicating the game is running through dgVoodoo2, but now I can't see that part of the screen to make sure whether dgVoodoo2 is utilized or not.

A curious problem, I'll look into it more myself too. Not sure if e.g. changing the desktop resolution would affect anything...

Yes, sounds like the same issue...

+ "zoomed in" issue w/ text outside screen

+ UI is bunched together and unusable

+ textures on low (can be changed in menu but seems to have no effect on game)

+ display resolution cannot be changed (can be changed in menu but seems to have no effect on game)

I downloaded dgVoodoo 2, installed, and tried to run it. I'm uncertain if I installed everything 100% correctly but also didn't get any indication that the program was indeed running during game startup.

I'm sorry to ask you to go through so much trouble... but I certainly appreciate your help.

A part of me wishes I'd just purchased Panzer Elite here on GOG and forgotten about "abandonware."

Edit:

Found this on a site --

I applied the Unofficial path SF_v01 and then the sf_fix_widescreen_bug patch.
And that's that!

But I'm not seeing live links to either of these elements.

I think I got it fixed, at least partially.

This doesn't seem to be at least fully a Windows 10 issue, and I mixed up two separate "zoom-in" issues.

1. First, the problem I had (and you apparently didn't have) that the menu was also zoomed in so I saw only part of it.

The fix for this was to set your Windows 10 desktop scaling to 100% (from Windows desktop, right mouse click, Display Settings => Scale and Layout). I had it at 125%, and that caused the zoom-in effect in loading screens and menus.

This problem doesn't appear on Windows 7 even if I have scaling at 125%.

2. Not seeing all the tutorial text fully during gameplay:

This seems to happen if you use any 16:9 resolution in the game. The reason I didn't see it on Windows 7 was because I was running the game in 1024x768 resolution. If I changed the game resolution to e.g. 1280x720 or 1920x1080, then this same problem appeared on Windows 7.

So try e.g. these settings in the game options:
- "Use Desktop Resolution" unchecked.
- "No Video Mode Restrictions" checked.
- Resolution 1024x768.

As for the low quality textures, I am unsure about that one. I have unchecked the "Decrease texture size" so I presume I should have better quality textures now in use, but the textures are still quite blurry at least inside the tank cockpit (both in Windows 7 and Windows 10). Then again, maybe that is how good they can get, this is quite an old game I think (well, I checked, this is supposed to be from 2008, I would have thought it is from 2002 or earlier...).

It might of course be too that since in your case the game uses the Intel graphics GPU, it is "forced" to use lower quality textures, or something... Do you have an option in your NVidia drivers to force all games and apps to use the NVidia? For shits and giggles, I might try to install it on Windows XP machine with an older GPU, to see if it works any different there (the textures I mean). Providing this game works on XP at all...

Yes there definitely seems to have some issue with 16:9 widescreen resolutions in this game, so all I can suggest is running the game in 1024x768. I know it sucks, but...

Maybe if we can find that widescreen fix, or the unofficial patch. Maybe in the Patches Scrolls site, if it still online?

EDIT: https://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/3995/7/

I see two patches there, no idea what they are, and do they work only with the retail version or also with my digital "SFI Super Bundle" version. Apparently they are for the original Russian version of the game that appeared before 2008?

Almost there!

Thanks for listing the settings! Seems "Use Desktop Resolution" was hidden behind troubleshooting window that said my graphics card could not run the game. I moved the pointer around the UI until "Use Desktop Resolution" popped up and tried a few times to make sure it was "off."

At this point I can run the game.

The tutorial info is still primarily off-screen, but the UI seems properly properly displayed in-game and game overall does seem like it can probably be played.

ATM I'm just trying to figure out if I can get the game to recognize my Nvidia card and up the detail. Currently it looks like games I played in the early 90's! ha.

If you have any thoughts would appreciate them, but certainly appreciate all the work you've done to this point. You've gone above and beyond what I would expect... or that I feel I deserve!

THANK YOU.

I would probably have missed that hidden box and given up. I've gone down the rabbit hole of SFK42 mod sites but can't seem to find live links to the widescreen fixes and unofficial patches. ha. Can you tell I haven't been a computer gamer since '94?

EDIT:

Well, spent the afternoon trying to get it to read my Nvidia card to no avail. Transferred file to my laptop and it recognized everything and even runs on graphics and textures on high!

So, might be best that since we can both run it well on laptops to just leave it at that. Wish there was a way to get the PC working, but hate to waste more of my time... and especially yours.

You were very kind to help and I won't forget that!

Well, I am certainly interested in getting this game to work as well. Not sure if we have the same version of the game, as said my version is the one that came with the "Strategy First SFI Super Bundle" that included something like 29 games, many many many years ago. I guess the game has disappeared from any digital stores after that. I wouldn't be surprised this version is making rounds in "abandonware sites" etc. as it is in a convenient DRM-free installer, pretty much like GOG games.

With my version, I did see some "mod launcher" at some point, so it may be this version has some unofficial patch or mod already, but it still seems to have issues on modern hardware. For the life of me I don't recall where I saw that mod launcher. The installer contains five files, setup.exe and setup-1.bin setup-2.bin setup-3.bin setup-4.bin.

Yesterday I googled a lot probably visiting the same sites you've visited, and things I've learned (lots of drama included!):

- By default the game tries to install itself under Program Files, and naturally you should not install it there, at least if you are going to use mods. I installed it under C:\Games\

- The reason the textures are so low resolution is because the game can't correctly identify modern graphics cards, thinking they have less that 128MB of memory. Hence it lets them use only the lowest quality textures. Yesterday I did find some instructions how to allegedly fix that, I saved the bookmark to my home PC and have to check it there. It was about changing some values in some of the game's config files, changing some "0"s to "-1" or something... I haven't tested it yet whether it works.

- The problem with widescreen resolutions is a well known issue, and probably the best way to overcome that is to use the third-party mods, or play the game in 4:3 resolutions.

- This game seems to have (had) quite a big cult following, considered as one of the very best tank sims apparently, at least those related to WWII.

- The game originally appeared in Russia(n) (or Ukrainian?), and was later (2008?) ported to English. That is why many of the sites and discussion appears in Russian.

- The original developers were ripped off by the publisher (not getting most of their money etc.), hence the lack of official patches and support. Apparently the original developers did make some updates on their own, without being paid.

- Later the third-party fixes and mods took over, apparently the most important being "STA". It seems the version to look for is "STA 1.2"; there have been never mods too like STA 3.3 and maybe even newer but if I understood right some company wanted money for them, and STA 1.2 is "good enough" and should be totally free.

- The reason links to most of the important mods like STA have disappeared is apparently that the maker was Ukrainian while the forum mods were Russian. Then the whole war in Ukraine took over and they couldn't be buddies anymore, apparently the mod maker removed any links to his mods from the sites. At some point (like 2017 or 2018) the STA 1.2 mod was offered in the bittorrent network, but even those links have disappeared.

- I tried to install and play the game also on my old Windows XP PC which has an old ATI Radeon X800 Pro graphics card, but the game ran very poorly on it and had lots of display issues. Maybe it is too old for this game, having only 1GB of RAM etc. Some forum discussions said though that this game was originally designed for Windows XP SP2, but I don't think the main issues with the game are with the Windows version, but how the game identifies and handles newer graphics cards and their drivers.

Judging by the screen captures, it makes lots of sense trying to find that STA mod (and possibly some other mods) because they really seem to overhaul the game's graphics and add lots of other stuff too. I looked at those pictures and it really seemed like a totally different game to what I have, LOL.

I will keep searching at least to that STA 1.2 (or possibly newer like 3.3) mod, but I am a bit concerned of downloading some unknown files from unknown sites.

Oh, and apparently dgVoodoo2 doesn't help with this game, apparently the game already uses so new DirectX/Direct3D that dgVoodoo2 doesn't even get activated with the game, or something. I don't get the dgVoodoo2 watermark with the game like I get with some older Direct3D/X games. I think dgVoodoo2 is meant to help with older games than this.

Wow, I appreciate your work!

BTW, I got Steel Fury DRM-free through Gamersgate a few days ago, but it did seem strange that the name "Brett" is on the welcome screen. I've never known Gamersgate to deal in cracked or unofficial software, but... who knows?

Yes, looks like we've been on generally the same trail...

I'm not certain yet whether I fully trust this site, but I've been reading through it: http://stasf2008.forumotion.com/f1-game-discussion-sf

The generic mod launcher that I keep reading about is JSGME.

The current STA mod seems to be at 3.4.

The 1.2 mod seems to be MIA (unless I'm just missing it) -- although did find a reddit thread where a request resulted in someone sending the mod to them privately.

I keep hearing about an unofficial pacth but not certain whether that is incorporated in a mod or not. I can imagine the patch might be of most value... but don't know...?

I also keep reading over-and-over that SFK42 has major issues recognizing Nvidia cards. But although it's mentioned over-and-over, I never hear them mentioning a fix.

Oh ok, so it is still available at least in one digital store. If only the STA mods could still be located...

I'll look into this more now, first checking the instructions to fix the low quality textures with changing a cfg file.

EDIT: Yep the instructions on this page fixed the textures for me, at least on my Windows 7 laptop:

On the file Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942\data\k42\loc_rus\config\config.engcfg under formats(), change the 0s in the bolded lines with -1 (they are changed below, four lines). Now I have considerably better looking textures especially inside the tank.

Many thanks. Will try this tonight when I'm back on PC.

Going to mark thread as "answered." Think you've gone above-and-beyond. Really do appreciate this!

Greetings friends.

I wanted to know if some of you know how to solve a low fps problem (9 fps) in steel fury 1942.

My pc: intel core 2 duo E8400 4 gb ram directx without graphics card (I don't know if that is the cause of the problem, since in the graphics settings it tells me that my graphics card does not have 128mb or something like that).

Maybe I am missing some program to execute satisfactorily.

Thanks in advance.

i dont know if anyone is still having this problem but as this game has recently released on steam i will post this anyway. their is a japanese site that seems dedicated to keeping the mods for this game alive , they have the sta mods and a wide screen fix https://wikiwiki.jp/pzfr/Steel%20Tank%20Add-on

one more edit , the wide screen fix that this site has seems to only work when you are using the sta 2.2 mod they also link. also the sta mod they link is about 4 gigs so it could take a while to download if you have bad internet

now if anyone is having those zooming issues try turning off desktop rescaling like the one person said

i hope this helps

edit lol i never use my gog account that explains the one rep in 3 years ...
