Apart from Men of War or Steel Division games.

Something like Company of Heroes but on a much larger scale with huge battles. I mean games where battles are realistically depicted, not abstract games like Hearts of Iron.

*lowers hand awkwardly*... sry, was the first thing I thought of when reading the topic title :P
Sudden Strike 1 or Sudden Strike 2perhaps? The battles there can be pretty huge, and it definitely feels more authentic compared to most other strategy games. Be warned though: it's crazy difficult.
No , that is still in development ( outside steel division of course ) though with the latest american civil war title i belief everything is moving into the right direction ;)

but did steel division 2 not nail it completely right? i haven't played the game as of yet but the single player dynamic campaign received a lot of praise

Oh wait a minute those guys that just partnered with slitherine to make their games available on steam.... i do belief you have a couple of them on GoG too

combat mission though their latest title is modern age

you can also take a look at ( brain cell *war kicks in ) Tank Warfare which is a very good though difficult to master combat simulation, not as good as combat mission concerning mission details and such but well respected by a very big part of the scene, i don't belief battles get as huge as combat mission or steel division 2 ( not sure if those are on GoG btw )

smaller but also a lot of fun are of course the close combat games, those are available on gog
I could think in any title from Graviteam Tactics o Tank Warfare. High Scope.

yea right forgot to mention the developer : graviteam - Tank Wars: Tunesia , just noticed they released a new patch again yesterday
What about a title that plays in RT with active pause, where you can fine-tune the actions of your units if you want, but where you have AI officers that would execute the more or les detailed instructions that you give them. This way, a true AI chain of command exists, and the player can intervene at any level, with the freedom to do so or not.

Whenever the player assigned objectives, (place, time, behavior...) the AI officers would have to devise plans in order to achieve them, and the officers below them the same.

If the player just wishes to deal with a handful of officers at the top of the chain of command, or mingle with the details of how a small unit performs a particular task (a commando, maybe). A game that would provide these options

Every officer has a personality and a level of competency. Then, the same could be said about any soldier.

What do you think about that? If Mount & Blade could make mounted combat feasible, anything can be done on a PC, eventually :)

Other recomendation but not so huge in scale could be any Combat Mission game. Being the last ones (Red Thunder, Normandy etc ) less abstracted than the first trilogy; also you can play them as turn based or real time.
