"A crime drama set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city's history, and centered on the lives of an immigrant and his family trying to expand their business and capitalize on opportunities as the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built. "

Not quite an accurate description, I'd say. It's more like a low-key morality drama with a bit of crime window dressing. Performances are stellar across the board, the script is intelligent and layered, and all in all I think writer/director J.C Chandor is a solid three for three right now (previous two films were Margin Call and All is Lost, both of which are similarly brilliant), and is becoming one of my favorite directors.

For some reason the film seems to have flown under everyone's radar, and was bafflingly absent at the 2014 Oscars.

I've seen some people complain that it was too slow, but I thought it was quite gripping.
from what i understand, i'd rather watch avatar with those humanoids who have blue skin rather than violent years.. if you want violence watch final destination 1-5. at least the story's better..

Umm... I just fail to understand what you're trying to get at. Final Destination and Avatar have literally nothing to do with A Most Violent Year.
I saw it, but I didn't like it too much. It wasn't a particular bad movie (especially the acting and the design was great), but I wasn't really satified with the ending and completely disliked the main character.
A well made film about very little violence. But if you want realism, then yes, you could easily say that your year(as the character involved) had a most violent year.

I honestly was expecting losta violence. The tension is ironic because you keep thinking the worst, but you never get that.

I will state however, the "violence is a virus" thing is completely retarded. That part where the creators talk about this as if they know wtf they are talking about is ridiculous to the point of absurdity.

To correct them:

Garnering followers under a banner is nothing new. However garnering followers under a false banner...well that isn't new either, but that usually leads to bad things no matter how well intended. Ya just can't get people to follow your banner/idea for long with a legion of morons before it eventually goes to spoil.
