Hey all! So as some of you will soon see, I am new here to GOG. Just got a computer as a present from a friend, who directed me to this site. He said it was one of the best places to get games digitally. From the selection I've seen, he seems to right. But I must ask: Are there any games on here that I need to play? Are there any I need to avoid playing? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to put preferences in the original post! I do prefer shooters, horror games, and puzzle games.

Omerta and Jack Keane are running jokes among GOGlodytes as games to avoid.
You need to play the Fallout games.

Thanks! I'll be sure to check those out! Well, the Fallout games, anyway. But I'm unfamiliar with the first two you mentioned. Why are they running jokes?
Games to avoid: vr soccer

must play: Wasteland 1 or 2.

They're so bad, people leave fake positive reviews on the store pages about how they cured cancer or brought back somebody from the dead or some other miraculous and hyperbolic nonsense.

Ah, I've seen those before. (Thanks, Steam!)

Years ago, GOG came up with something called "Insomnia Sale", where each game got hefty discounts, but was only available in limited quantities. Only one game at a time was on sale until every "copy" of it was gone, then the next game in line would come up. Popular games like System Shock 2 or Planescape Torment would sell several hundred copies in a few seconds, but then Jack Keane 2: The Fire Within came up. Probably not a bad game, but one with limited appeal and a relatively high price, so it held up the sale for several hours, because no one bought it.
For laughs, people started to write absurd reviews in order to "convince" people to buy the game and move the event along. That's how it became a running joke.

As for "must play" games, that kind of depends on what types of games you like.

Would certainly help if you talked a bit about your tastes (gaming-wise, as I assume you played games on other media before), as it's kinda hard to make good suggestions without any clue on your part.

Unless you mean, game so good that even if you hate the genre they might be worth it, in this case, I'll throw in:

- The Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind
- Deus EX
- Fallout 1 & 2

Aas for newer ones, you could try the "The Witcher" games

Games to avoid:

Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods - Enhanced Edition

The rest, as said, is really much more a matter of personal taste...

I haven't found many games I haven't liked. But I do prefer horror games, shooters, and puzzle games.

If you like those, then I would first recommend the System Shock series. Those are basically combinations of those genres.

There's much more to Keane then that...

GoG occasionally holds unusual sales, the most popular (or hated, depending who you ask) are the insomnia sales which give really great prices on games but limit the quantity of games sold and only sell one game at a time until it runs out.

During the first such sale most games flew out the door, until Jack Keane came up. A game so unpopular that it took hours (as opposed to minutes for most other games) to sell out and drove many forum regulars to post fake reviews and bulk buy gifting copies just to run the numbers down.

Jack Keane is legendary.
Keane is love. Keane is life.

As for unmissable games... FTL is awesome. Ridiculously difficult roguelike awesomeness. Tales of Maj'Eyal is similarly great (though much more traditional roguelike)
Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 are classics, the Shadowrun games are all awesome, The Banner Saga is too.
It really depends what kind of games you like I suppose, there's quite a lot of classics here :)

Are the ones on here better than the Shadowrun shooter from 2007? Because that one was awful.
Well, judging from your avatar and name, I guess I don't need to tell you about the Myst series, huh?

They're actually RPGs. From what I understand, not dissimilar to the SNES Shadowrun game from the 90s.

Never played that one, but I'd say yes.
They're turn based tactical RPGs (pretty much my favourite genre so I am a little biased) and very good examples of the genre.

And as I see you have expressed a preference for puzzle games; I'd definitely recommend SpaceChem. You can usually pick it up for under £1 (or a $1 I presume) when there's a big sale on and it's an excellent puzzle game.
I don't play many shooters / FPSs any more, but I can certainly recommend Unreal Tournament and Jedi Knight 2.
