micktiegs_8: I upgraded my RAM from 8 to 16GB
avatar
timppu: Hmm, I've been wondering if I should do the same for this ageing gaming laptop... What games benefit from it? Is 16GB RAM the new 8GB, ie. the recommended setting for new-ish games, even indie games like No Man's Sky? How about Minecraft, is it hungry for RAM too?

Back when I bought this laptop several years ago, I recall the consensus was the 4GB is (barely) enough for new games, and 8GB is when you want to be on the safe side. But back then 32bit games were the norm, it might be now games are being more and more 64bit and maybe demand more RAM?
I can definitely say that in the case of Minecraft, upgrading to 16 GBs of RAM will be necessary - but only if you're playing in certain conditions, and only as you explore farther and farther from the zero point (your initial spawn point along all three axes). I play it in native resolution (1440p), draw distance = med-high and with an expanded world. With the metropolis that I'm currently building, it eats up 11 GBs of RAM for (think) 3,000 x 3,000 blocks of city building, plus the lighting and number of villagers.

Cities: Skylines and Train Fever are rather RAM-hungry too (up to 12 GBs used when running those games) when cities and networks become larger. And that's when playing games natively in OS X.

If I want to play games that only run on Windows, I split my RAM between OS X and a VM. I can get away with playing Saints Row 2 with little in the way of hiccups, but Saints Row: The Third and Hard Reset: Redux require more allocation to the VM.

So yes, 16 GBs of RAM is the new 8 GBs for most gamers, but for my usage patterns I'm purchasing a 32 GB RAM kit next week. I tend to play a lot of intensive games as well as multitask, and with OS X being more RAM- and CPU- intensive it leaves little room for Windows unless I upgrade, so your mileage may vary.
I am probably going to upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077. I wanted to upgrade for The Witcher 2 and 3 but life happened.

Syme: Since my old PC was 8 years old, I bought a new PC for Fallout 4 last November. Then I discovered that Fallout 4 is incompatible with my monitor. I was not pleased.

kusumahendra: ??? How come a game is not compatible with a monitor? What does that even mean?
Fallout 4 is wide-screen only. I had to edit the ini file to playat 1280x1024. Unfortunately, this means the lockpicking interface is invisible, parts of the power armor interface are off screen, and the sniper scope doesn't display properly.
I'm not too high on a lot of the newer games coming out. Plus, I have a problem paying more than $10 for a game lol. I have a big enough backlog to last me another couple of years :)

What?!? o_O
They don't support GUI scaling? A game on a level of Fallout 4?

Is there no mods to fix it? You know, something like skyui for skyrim, or darnified ui for oblivion? Don't tell me they go hard coded like they do with morrowind. That would be ridiculous.
I decided to throw in for some Kingston RAM sticks to get me up to par for No Man's Sky. I'm pretty skeptical about it, but I thought what the hell. Can't go 4 gigs forever. If I'm gonna plunk down some cash for an upgrade, it's gonna be an ambitious title like NMS, not some chump COD shooter.

640K ought to be enough for anybody (even Nintendo Magazine System).
I've been thinking switch to intel procie from AMD and DDR4 RAM this year for M&B: Bannerlord. Haven't consider yet if i had to upgrade my 650ti as well but recent game required 2GB+ Vram. :/

Why did you not upgrade your monitor at the same time you bought the PC?

*edit* On topic: if I get the job I've applied for I'll be building a new rig shortly thereafter. Not because of any specific game, but because the current rig is 7 years old and it's time for a new one.

I did find a mod that fixed the lockpicking and mostly fixed the power armor UI, but he wasn't able to fix sniping.

Because unlike my 8 year-old PC, the monitor still functions properly, Bethesda's shortcuts aside. And money.

I understand (I've also got an old 1280x1024 monitor that's perfectly functional, but it's hooked to my old experimental linux box). Just seems odd not to grab a widescreen monitor with a new build, especially since almost everything is geared towards widescreen now anyway.

Money is always a major consideration though.
