Were you actually "scared" or just scared of losing progress and replaying a section?

Never really scared in the actual sense of the word, but of course I didn't want to bump into hostiles either, so I constantly paid attention. To me the game was more "creepy" than downright scary. Some parts more than others.

It's GOTY man. It's not something trying to mindfuck you like Silent Hill. It's meant to be tense and atmospheric with Hollywood grade production values. There's a killer after you and you must figure out how to avoid it on each level constructed to give you cover and obstacles. It's especially great because of the AI. They put a lot of effort into it and the little details make it really incredible.

For example, you're hiding under a table. The alien looks around for you, spots you, and PRETENDS not to see you while it gets a little smile and creeps around on its toes like it's walking away. Then it jumps down to get you. This is what makes it stand out from other games in the genre. Yes, you can watch playthroughs and read reviews. But your experience with it will be different than anyone else's.

It's basically hide and go seek with lockers. I don't get why so many people call it a TRUE Alien game because it is not. Hopefully in the future, there will be a TRUE Alien game. For me, Aliens VS Predator and Colonial Marines is 1000 times more fun. Buy those two games instead.

I also wanna say in this post that I was really impressed with Aliens vs. Predator Classic 2000. Unbelievable, that game. It is very true to the films in terms of balance. Really interesting and unique. Terrifying, though. Fucking terrifying.

One of the best gaming memories I have is fighting off a horde of aliens in that game with a few other guys. And even though I wasn't alone, it was still a terrifying experience.

I really like it, too. It's a bit cheesy dialogue but aware of that and doesn't care and does everything else GREAT. Definitely part of my DVD collection (of course, goes right next to Alien Quadrilogy set!)

There's some very enjoyable (and scary) stuff...but I couldn't finish it, I just ended up getting really frustrated and exasperated with the game. Fun fact: the alien can kill you while you are in the process of saving your game...

It's still a very good attempt at a big budget survival horror game. I might come back to it at some point...but only at the lowest difficulty.

I just played some Aliens VS Predator(the most recent one) today. The face huggers in that game, almost made me jump out of my chair today. You can see the part that is supposed to go into your mouth, move around... They look so real.
