I've already got a copy of this game and I would like to find my new copy a good home. Please tell me what your favourite horror game is and why?

My personal favorite goes back to early playstation games, Dino Crisis as I loved the Resident Evil style gameplay but with a dinosaur sci-fi theme. It's a shame there were only two games in the main story. I figure I'll play the spinoff Dino Stalker sometime and Dino Crisis 3 was xbox only, so I never had a chance to play it. I've considered getting an old xbox just for a few exclusive games like this one, though I've read that it was mediocre.

What are your favorites? Please share and I'll pick a winner later in the week, thank you!

I remember playing Silent Hill on the PSX with the lights out and nearly jumping out of my skin when exploring the hospital. No game since has frightened the life out of me quite like that! Although (not a horror game as such) but exploring the Ocean House Hotel in Vampire: The Masquerade came a pretty close second. Still haven't played it again... :)

EDIT: Just an update to say that I now have the game so one less to go into the hat. Thank you BlueKronos for the giveaway and good luck to everyone :)

Oh, what a great topic to come by! My favorite horror game would be Silent Hill 3 as it took me by total surprise and still up until today, I found its 3D character modeling top notch. Real-time bleeding walls, a little bit action-oriented but with the right dozes, it surely is a winner for me.

As for other good but not as known videogames, try The Calling (Wii), Extermination (PS2), White Day : A labyrinth named school (PC and iOS remake) and a personal recommendation: HELLNIGHT (PSX).

Any Clock Tower game (SNES, PSX, PS2) is great too.

Last but not least: Check Chris's Survival Horror Quest if you haven't already done so: http://horror.dreamdawn.com

Good-Luck you all.

Thanks for the chance!

System Shock 2 because it is horror, cyberpunk and SHODAN is a great villain.

I loved the Elvira games back in the day. Good adventures with a little bit of RPG mixed in, very creepy, awesome graphics (for the time) and gruesome deaths, like getting your throat ripped out by a werewolf. Considering the linked graphic is 27 years old you can guess how far the games were ahead of its time.

Sadly the Elvira games are not here but we do have the spiritual successor Waxworks, though it is not on sale right now.
Hope whoever wins enjoys it, mighty nice of you to do so (I have the game so count me out, I just like talking horror games. :D ). I've actually been messing around with the PC versions of Silent Hill, classic Resident Evil, and Dino Crisis lately.

I find some extra charm in the early 3D era of horror games partly because the low res graphics made my mind fill in the details a bit more. I also have a certain fondness for the pre-rendered backdrop/fixed camera style like in the original Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil games.

Some of my favorites (probably boring/predictable answers but...)

Silent Hill 2 - As much as I prefer 3 in several ways (I felt it was more creepy and had better gameplay), 2 really set a hallmark for having a meaningful story not just in horror but in gaming. When you realize that everything you saw in Silent Hill 2 had a personal reason behind it the impact was that much more disturbing. Also, Yamaoka does damn good sound work with SH2 being a fantastic show of his efforts.

Parasite Eve - There's a lot I like about the original PE, the only thing I hold against it is that there wasn't more of it in the sense of its RPG style gameplay (It's an RPG but with the length of a survival horror more or less). The soundtrack was great, the gameplay was fun, and the theme of evolution taking normal creatures and turning them into monstrosities gave it a decent enough creep factor.

On a side note, Silent Hill 2 and 3 still look really good to this day with nothing more than a simple resolution bump.
