Shadowstalker16: Hardcore gaming is still fairly uncommon. I feel you have got tired not of games but their slandering on mainstream media and such media attention makes one think games are very mainstream. I kinda know how you probably feel. It feels like you knew and loved this industry so much all these years and then suddenly current events seem to invoke the thought that you weren't involved at all. If that is how you feel; then I recommend going solely complex indie for a few months and then re-evaluate your position. There is still plenty of anti-mainstream Bohemian and strange games in that market and finding a good one will probably be worth your while. I mean; check out the Crusader Kinds games; it has only one audience which is a super hardcore group. Similar with Styx: Master of Shadows or lesser known AAA games like Splinter Cell or Age of Empires.

SpooferJahk: Pretty much, I mean one of my favorite games of last year was experiencing Crysis for the first time after building a pretty decent gaming PC that could run the bloody thing. That should tell you something there, I was having more fun with a 2007 title than something like Watch Dogs, which I did play. It was... ok but not near as bad as everyone made it out to be or as amazing as Ubisoft wanted us to believe. It was so painfully average that it felt sterile and forgettable.

Daliz: Just take a break.

For me, it changes periodically, usually in cycles of a few months. Right now I don't play that much myself, I'm more into music. But I know that changes. It might be next week or after a month or two, I'll play more again.

I never stop buying games though, lol.

SpooferJahk: Music has been a thing for me as of late, been building up the music collection again after getting away from CD purchases for a long time. Trying to get back into other things but after some events in my personal life, I am trying to get stuff sorted back into order and it is kind of tough to get back into other things. The major thing is working out again, haven't been regularly doing that as of late.
In that case, I don't think you're really into a problem here. I've had this for months. I get through it by tasking myself with hunting for masterpieces among the slosh and trying to understand complicated mechanics. When you have a grand great long game with high complexity; you always feel excited about what strategies you can come up with ever time you play. You could try out a good strategy game for this. Total War or Galactic Civilizations or Crusader Kings maybe?
It is not age, I am way too old and when Eador:Genesis came out, I played it like a madman for months and felt like a kid again.
It sounds more like you are tired of the whole culture around it, which is understandable, videogamers must be about the dumbest subculture there is, even worse than football fans. So just stop looking at general forums, stop reading news, and just play old games you like or try new old ones of genres you like.
I have this problem, too, whenever I am fully done with a game, instead of trying another one, I go look on the internet and laugh at the videogame culture or start flamewars, it is amusing at first, but quickly becomes depressing. That is why I am here now looking in General Discussion and feeling bad after playing King of Dragon Pass for a week.

Nirth: I do that too. Install the game, find the latest patches, maybe some interesting mod that won't mess up original gameplay like a texture pack and widescreen patch, fix settings so I don't have to do that and test the game and leave it in optimal condition only to jump into another game and do that same instead of playing one that I've fixed. Not a waste of time in my opinion as I enjoy fixing games
You should apply for a job at GOG.com and prepare packages for those of us who hate doing this stuff. ;)
Play video games if you want to play video games : do what you want, and don't bother about all the media, hype and such things. Play (and think) the "way" you want. For example, I personally don't really like the "let's play" thing in general, so I don't watch (and care really about) them ;) It's another "way" to see video games, it's not mine, but... well... that's not a problem. There is always people that you won't share tastes. Sometimes, you're in the main movement and will share tastes of a lot of people. Sometimes it's the contrary. Is this really that important if in all case, they don't "impact" you, the way you want to play and what your tastes are ?
Another example, if video game journalism is an important thing for you, find a source of information you "approve" and like (even if I know how difficult it is).
Same thing for video games : play video games you like and want to support (because of the spirit of the team behind, because you love their ideas, because they have done a DRM-Free game without DLC, because they simply have done a great work, because you simply love their game...). Play at games which correspond to your "vision" of gaming : to be a little caricatural, mine is stuck mainly in the 90's and early 00's :) But it doesn't mean I don't find anything interesting today or lately : GOG, Arcen Games, Harebrained Schemes, Goldhawk Interactive, Factorio's team... Are some examples (for me) of things I love ! Video games are a big industry now with lot of mixed things alongside, but it's not only this, there is a lot of good things too.
And finally, play video games that you really want to play like some others said. Sometimes, you just have to find the game, it may be as simple as that (or replay one of the game you really loved).

One other thing : I heard someone saying one day something like "profusion kill desire". May be you simply see too much things about video games, and (may be) have access to too many video games. It's not because you love video games that you have to play video games (and have to watch things about video games). Take a little break from things (and may be games) who aren't really interesting you. And focus on what you want, and/or, as others said, (re)discover some new/other hobbies :)

Hope this will help you a little !

(sorry if it's longer that it should've and if I've digressed, and sorry for my bad english)

It's a mix of age and burnout. The age factor can't be helped, but you are in control of how much videogame exposure you are taking in. Stop watching videos and doing anything video game related besides actually playing them. Play only what you think looks good, and play at your own rate. And you could always take a break from gaming as well, they'll still be there if you find the need to come back a few months or a year later.

SpooferJahk: Guess my issue is losing the fun factor out of it because of outside things that are eating at me.
Then I'd recommend limiting exposure to the things that are eating it out, or take a break from gaming until it appears fun again. Plus other hobbies of course.

My friends are multiplayer whores, they keep playing wow, dota2 and whatnot and will never shut up about it. So when they start talking dota, I just ignore them for a while. And then take revenge by talking about Deus Ex. Works for me.

I could probably do freelance work but not full time. It's a pity they don't offer that. Also, no requirement to live in Poland and I won't accept games as payment (which is something I can see they would offer).

Same here. I get my revenge by reminding a few of them when I've got them into a few games then I quit and played something else only for them to learn that it's fun to try something new. People are so bloody conservative.
